Work submitted later than the Monday after a Tuesday deadline will be awarded a mark of zero. For a full break down of the grade / mark schemes at the University of Dundee, see Assessment Criteria in this Module Guide.  Critical Writing Purpose Critical writing involves evaluating information, theories or situations and is an important way of analysing information, posing questions and challenging 'common sense' knowledge. The critical essay is an important academic tool that allows your knowledge to develop, because rather than being a personal opinion, the critical essay requires an in-depth analysis of a topic. Tasks By the end of the course, you are required to submit a theory informed case study analysis on your selected case (1000 words +/- 10 %). This assessment is 70% of the overall marks for the module. Each submitted assessment should not exceed 1,000 words not including references and appendices. Suggested structure Your case study should follow the following format: Introduction: A brief outline of the case and some introductory comments about the product/organisation under investigation and why it is necessary to study it. Main body: The report should present measurable, relevant and informative elements of theory backed analysis. Selected models, frameworks and concepts should be structured under appropriate headings, labels and drawn mainly from course materials. However, relevant additional material from academic sources will be rewarded as an indication of wide and further reading and research. Analysis: Analysis of the selected organisation’s management practices under investigation is comprehensive, analytical and credible. Evaluation: An evaluation framework should be applied to each section under investigation i.e. what are the management issues of significance. Critical Appraisal must demonstrate the benefits and limitation of your analysis and evaluation of the management practices in the case. Summary and Conclusions: As a result of your investigations and application of management models, frameworks and theory, what measures of significant and sufficient added value to the organisation should be considered? The case study should further demonstrate: • A logical structure • An appropriate selection and use of resources • Written within the word-limit • Few spelling, style and grammatical errors • A well-laid out report showing originality in approach • Evidence of an investigative approach • Evidence of wider reading beyond the teaching & learning materials distributed in class • Citation of all references consulted Excellent A1-A5 Effective, critical and analytical approach towards the task. Strong evidence of critical understanding of sources and creative writer’s voice. Effective balance between sources and own ideas / examples. Excellent development of main ideas and effective conclusion. Structure is very effective and appropriate to task. Clear overall progression. Paragraphs / sections have clear central topic, logically constructed and appropriate in length. The work is cohesive throughout with good use of cohesive devices and excellent referencing of sources. Language fluent. Uses technical lexis although there may be occasional inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. Vocabulary and spelling mainly accurate, but there may be rare errors. Excellent communication. Uses a wide range of structures with the majority of sentences error-free. Punctuation is very good with occasional errors. Academic style is very good and demonstrates appropriate use of register.
