Lab Report: Experiment 3 Projectile motion Purpose Verify the flight range and flight time of a ball launched at an angle with an initial velocity. Theory The theory behind this lab activity... was to find how the distance from the start point until the ball lands and the time it takes from three set angles of launch and from differences forces. Projectile motion is a form of motion in which an object is thrown indirectly nears the earth’s surface, and it moves along a curved path under the action of gravity. The idea of independence of horizontal and vertical motions is that if a white ball is dropped from the rest and a black ball is simultaneously projected horizontally, at any given time, both balls will have the same y-position, y-velocity, and y-acceleration despite having different x-position and x-velocities. To determine projectile motion, there are five different equations, showed as follow: Equipment The equipment used was the projectile launcher (ME – 6800), a plastic ball, two photogates (ME – 9204A), plump bob, photogate bracket, 2m – meterstick, white paper, carbon paper, PASCO 850 interface, and a time-of-flight timing pad. Experimental Method In this experiment, the ball is launched three timesevery time from a projectile launcher and is supposed to hit the timing pad so the results can be recorded including the initial speed and flight time. The initial vertical position of the ball had to be recorded first. Data analysis Discussion and Conclusion Questions: 1. Does flight range R depend on θ (the angle of the initial velocity above the horizontal)? Why? 2. Does flight range R depend on the initial velocity V0 of the ball? Why?
