Dr. Walls and class, Self-care is important to maintain overall personal health. It also allows for positive feeling and boost to confidence. Further, self-care can help individuals remain motivated... and to stay mentally sharp. (Younas, 2017). Self-leadership leads to independent decision making, personal discipline, and offers a sense of self-control within their personal and professional lives. (Jooste and LeRoux, 2014). Self-care and self-leadership are interrelated due to the fact that one cannot exist without the other. Good self-care habits lead to strong positive leaders and the ability to make positive changes within organizations. According to the Chamberlain Care Model (2018) self-care allows us to have the capacity to care for others more effectively and provide our best work each day. In short, by recognizing our own needs it allows us to recognize and address the needs of others creating productive and satisfying outcomes within our profession. Lack of self-care can lead to dissatisfaction with work environments, inability to perform basic job functions effectively, and inability to handle work related stress. This leads to poor outcomes for patients, poor working relationships, and creates the potential for abandonment of the nursing profession as a whole. Self-care and self-leadership are the foundation for effective care of others. Authentic leadership is the concept of too thine own self be true and is rooted in an individual’s personal values, convictions, motives, and emotions. (Waite, McKinney, Smith-Glasgow, & Meloy, 2014). Thus, without self-care, an individual, does not know their own needs or their selves. This knowing of self leads to the ability to make independent, competent decisions and to selfdiscipline which are essential to the ability to self-lead. As a future nurse educator, self-care is imperative. Not only does it allow me to rolemodel the importance of knowing self and recognizing potential for burn-out but it will allow me to balance work life and the needs of others without compromising my own personal needs. The ability to care for myself will also give me the ability to contribute positively to my personal and professional development within the classroom, even if the conditions are difficult. Thus, leading to effective leadership of self and students. Two recommendations to cultivate self-care and selfleadership would be not to dwell on the negative and to align myself with a positive mentor.
