COURSE DESCRIPTION Principles of visual and personal language, expanding the meaning of drawing, drawing materials, methods, and approaches. COURSE OBJECTIVES / LEARNING OUTCOMES Contemporary Dr... awing will focus on the materials and processes that help define a contemporary drawing practice. The course will explore how to approach drawing as its own, autonomous media rather than a pre-requisite or study of others. Work in the classroom will primarily focus on the practice of drawing through the completion of individual assignments. Specific media guidelines along with individual artists profiles will be provided for each project. We will also engage discussions regarding the history of drawing and how it relates to other media. To foster your critical thinking and communication skills we will evaluate our artworks with public group critiques, individual critiques, handwritten criticism and oral presentations. Talking about art with clarity enables us to better understand one another’s intent and to articulate constructive criticism and comments with greater precision. A functioning specialized vocabulary can transform how we perceive art and it enables us to employ the proficiencies we are acquiring with greater agility and efficiency. Open dialogue is an important factor in the studio setting and your participation is vital. Projects, lectures, critiques, and presentations are designed to equip the student with the ability to: • Develop a knowledge of contemporary trends and practices in drawing; • Produce work that resonates within the context of contemporary drawing; • Speak about their work effectively – i.e., demonstrating familiarity with the field and how their work relates to her/his personal intentions. • To make progress in the development of their artistic voice.
