Clinical Microbiology – C 453 Clinical Microbiology – C453 Introduction: Antibiotics were created to prevent growth or destroy different types of bacteria. Certain antibiotics can have what... is called selective toxicity. Selective toxicity is when the antibiotic kills off the microbial cells but the host cells are not harmed. This is important because in the body there are good bacteria and bad bacteria, when being treated with an antibiotic you do not want to kill off all of your good bacteria. A huge benefit of broad-spectrum antibiotics is that they do not target a certain bacteria, they are effective on a large range of bacterias. Narrow-spectrum antibiotics are beneficial when you are trying to target a certain bacteria, they defend again that specific bacteria. Materials and Methods: I began my Kirby-Bauer Diffusion test on 8/11/19. I start my procedure by gathering my materials which were as follows: active S. epidermitis culture broth, antibiotics disks-gentamicin, novobiacin, and penicillin, bleach, coffee cup, disposable cup, hand soap, rubbing alcohol, cooking pot, lighter, oven mitt, marker, paper towels, water, stove, PPE, ruler, nutrient agar, petri dish, tweezers, sterile swabs, tea candle, test tube clamp, and test tube rack. I then washed my hands and cleaned my work area. I applied my PPE and started my experiment. Using the agar plate I poured before beginning the experiment I labeled 3 equal sections, one penicillin, one novobiocin, and the other gentamicin.
