Reflection on Learning Weeks 1-8 Chamberlain University NR-500NP: Foundational Concepts and Advanced Practice Roles Week One I learned a lot about how different a master’s prepared nurse ... is compared to a bachelor’s prepared nurse. I did not realize how much more they prepare a nurse with their master’s in their leadership skills. They are more independent and thus do require to take on leadership roles. When you work more on your own you have to be more confident in the work you do and not be afraid to question others. Being able to stay up to date on evidenced based practice is an important concept for master’s prepared nurses. The healthcare industry is an evolving society and is important to be able to adapt to the changes. Week Two This week I learned about the four different APN. I never realized there were four roles. I always knew about each one, but I never would have seen the four as APN roles. I can now see why they are categorized like that. I learned more about the clinical specialist role and its description. I look forward to being able to help my community when in my new role as an NP. I am most nervous at not being knowledgeable when transitioning into the NP role. I am afraid I will not know what I am doing. I hope to be as prepared as possible. I am going to take advantage of my clinical experience and using that to learn. I also hope to use the reflective journaling strategy to help aide my transition. Week Three Patient-centered care is an important aspect of the healthcare field. I’ve learned about how cultural humility and holistic care impact the care that is provided. It is the simple things that can make the biggest impact. Self-reflection can be one of the biggest aspects when caring for people so that we remember that each individual patient has a different treatment plan. Each patient requires different attention and not one patient is the exact same. Treatment can also be affected by implicit bias. Implicit bias can affect the care we provide to individuals. Cultural humility, holistic care, and implicit bias all intertwine to become the patient-centered care that we provide. In my experience, changes in healthcare have affected nurses’ ability to provide person- centered, holistic care. Changes have allowed the care to be more person-centered rather than illness-centered. It has allowed the nurses approach to be about the patient. Research-based studies provide nurses and healthcare providers to provide care that is best for the patient. Week Four As a future NP, I believe that leadership skills are vital in providing the best care. To be an effective leader we must know the type of leader we are and the qualities we possess. I believe that the connective leadership style that most closely aligns with my personal leadership characteristics is the servant leadership style. I believe that I often put the needs of others before mine. I am the type of person that believes that in order for a leader to be effective they must not be afraid to do the job that may seem “below” them. When I was a CNA, the DON of the facility never helped work on the floor. I believed that the DON should have worked as a nurse on the floor and also help do CNA work. This would have allowed the DON to view the what was happening in the facility. As a future leader, helping others with their work will help me become a better boss and leader. This can also empower others to feel like I am listening to their needs. I want to be an effective leader and be able to guide others positively. Week Five Systems theory and complexity science can affect the role of the nurse practitioner. It allows a nurse practitioner to understand the different problems that can arise and how the professional adapts. We must know how to overcome each obstacle that we encounter. It is important to stay up to date on practices and how these practices affect our work because it will affect our work. Just as now as nurses we must adapt to evidence-based practice, the same will apply as a nurse practitioner. As I work now as a nurse in the operating room, I have noticed how much change there has been between guidelines and what is expected of us. As I reflect back on my work, I understand that we always try to do what is best for our patients. This is why guidelines are always changing. Evidenced-based practice will always be evolving in our line of work. Week Six As a future NP, my role in implementation of EBP is important. It is vital that implement EBP because it will allow me to provide quality, safe care to each patient I encounter. As medicine is always evolving, it is up to me to stay up to date with best evidenced-based practice. New ideas and old ideas always contribute to the research that is gathered for evidenced-based practice. It is also up to me to question and contribute to evidenced-based practice. I may have to challenge ideas, or I may have to change certain practices. Barriers always arise when implementing EBP. Other workers can be barriers to implementing EBP, as well as myself. Sometimes we as workers can make it difficult to implement change because we get into routines and have difficulty with changing routine. We must remember that we practice for our patients in order to give them the best care. Week Seven I think it is important to be able to recognize incivility in the workplace, whether we are directly involved or indirectly. It is unfortunate that in a profession where caring is one of the most important qualities, we can experience incivility. I hope that as I continue to become comfortable in my profession, I am able to assist more easily in helping de-escalate situations. I think a lot of people would be surprised with how incivility occurs in the health profession. I believe some would be concerned that it occurs. I think that the outings and workplace socializing events that are hosted are good ways to help combat workplace incivility. I believe that tensions would still arise, but I also believe that we would be more comfortable talking to each other about problems. Creating a healthy work environment is very important to have a successful team. [Show More]
