PHIL 347 Week 3 Course Project Issue Review - Download To Score An A

Document Content and Description Below

Issue: College Should Be Free for Everyone Aspect 1: Economy Pro: Deming, D. (2019, July 19). Tuition-Free College Could Cost Less Than You Think. NY Times. The writer breaks down the costs ass... ociated with free college for all. In recent years, the government has spent estimated 91 billion dollars on federal aid for students of low-income families and provided tax credits for all families paying for college. He argues that all of the money provided for these programs can be shifted to make college free and, in some cases, the neediest student already receives free college based on various forms of financial aid. Additionally, student who have access to a college education has a chance to increase lifetime earnings, thus, increasing tax revenues, and further cutting in the long-run costs to the government. Con: Andersen, E. (2020, February). The Pros and Cons Of Tuition-Free College. Retrieved March 2020, from College Raptor: https://www.collegeraptor.com/find- colleges/articles/affordability-college-cost/pros-cons-tuition-free-college/ The author begins with describing that money has to come from somewhere which would subsequently affect an increase in taxes. The upper class and/or middle-class families would take a more significant hit on taxes. Aspect 2: Accessibility Pro: Gunn, D. (2017, June 14). Making college accessible to low-income students is about more than just tuition. Pacific Standard. Financial challenges in low-income families has a direct correlation to the low rates of completing higher education. The research completed in this paper suggests that non-financial supports assist with ensuring low-income students finish their degrees. In return, this would create a more educated workforce. Con: Andersen, E. (2020, February). The Pros and Cons Of Tuition-Free College. Retrieved March 2020, from College Raptor: https://www.collegeraptor.com/find-colleges/articles/affordability- college-cost/pros-cons-tuition-free-college/ In this section, the author argues that college would become “too” accessible. For instance, it will create an idea that it is not as important to complete. Some students are driven by their financial status especially by something considered out of reach. Having the access would water down the desire. Additionally, it would create an environment where multiple graduates are either fighting for the same jobs or overqualified for certain jobs. Aspect 3: Health & Stress Pro: Scholoarship America. (2019, October). Financial Stress Prevents College Students from Graduating. What Can We Do? Retrieved from Scholarship America: https://scholarshipamerica.org/blog/financial-stress-prevents-college-students-from- graduating-what-can-we-do/ According to the staff writers at Scholarship America, “college students are constantly worrying about money,” [ CITATION Sch19 \l 1033 ]. Majority of low-income families worry about paying for tuition or associated expenses which leads to stress while in school. While some students are able to attend school without any restrictions, others are facing every roadblock, making it 2-3 times harder. Con: Rhine, R. (2019, September 5). Free College Will Hike Costs for Taxpayers and Make the System More Opaque. Philadelphia Inquirer. The parents of the student who could receive free education may take a hit in unexpected tax increases. For families that are barely staying above water with finances may not be able to cover the proposed amount. This could cause financial stress for a household before the first student could take advantage. Additionally, that same family may pay the required tax amount and still not produce a student to attend college. References: Andersen, E. (2020, February). The Pros and Cons Of Tuition-Free College.
