EDUC 5210 Unit 4 Discussion The learning process combines the knowledge gain with the development of certain attitudes or beliefs or values and physical development. Therefore, the teaching and lear... ning approach should support cognition, motivational and emotional influences of the environment, and personal and social developmental factors (Schunk, 2012). Three learning domains, Cognitive, Affective, and Psychomotor, are identified to ensure teaching and learning practices can address overall learning and incorporate the same in constructing lessons, taking into consideration the different learning behaviors (Kasilingam, Ramalingam, & Chinnavan, 2014). The Cognitive domain addresses various ways children gain knowledge and target the development of mental skills. The Affective domain focuses on emotional development and the development of a learner's attitude in acquiring certain values and incorporating the same in real life. The Psychomotor domain deals with the development of physical skills to achieve accuracy in certain motor activities. Bloom identified six levels within the cognitive domain, from the simple recall or recognition of facts, as the lowest level, through increasingly more complex and abstract mental levels, to the highest order which is classified as evaluation (Bloom's Taxonomy, 1956). My lesson plan is developed in the cognitive domain. I will present this with the below example in view of a lesson that took place recently in grade 12 physics class. It addresses the unit on Electromagnetism. Recall / Remembering (Low-level Information) In order to recall the basic facts and concepts, the diagram of electromagnets was displayed on the projector and a small movie clip of how electromagnets are used to separate Iron from the scrap was played and shown to the students. This part of the lesson preactivated students’ knowledge about how electricity can produce magnetism. Formative assessment As a part of understanding and formative assessment, the students were shown an image of an eye surgeon using an electromagnet next to patient eyes, and an X-ray of a patient’s eye, highlighting a small metal piece in the side of an eye. The students got engaged in a deep discussion of how this works. This discussion ultimately led them to how an MRI machine is used to scan the internal system of the human body using hydrogen ions. This also provided me an insight into how most of the students were ready to move ahead into the concept of electromagnetism. A diagram of how the bulb lights up when the coil was moving into the magnetic field was displayed on the projector and lab equipment (magnet Rotating coil generator) was arranged on the table for the students to move the coil manually and generate electricity. Summative assessment – Evaluation (High-Level Information) As per the enrichment activity, the students were asked to build up their own generator using physics lab equipment. They needed to build up their own DC generator and piped up the analytical concept of why only the relative motion of the coil and the magnet produced electricity. The students also questioned about the AC power source connected to the coil directly [Show More]
