Brain-Based Strategies for the Adolescent Brain (Name Withheld) University of the People EDUC 5210: Learning Theory and Implication for Instruction Unit 5 Written Assignment Dr. Kimberly Doerflei... n, Instructor March 3, 2021 Brain-Based Strategies for the Adolescent Brain In the adolescent brain during one’s teenage years, there are changes in the amount of white matter and grey matter in the brain (Armstrong, 2016). With this evolution of the brain, these changes signal developments of how one processes information in relation to the number of nerve cells. Armstrong (2016) states that increases in white matter influences how neurons can communicate with each other quickly; and a reduction of gray matter which results in a more efficient brain due to a process of pruning. Keeping these things in mind, teachers must adjust their instructing practices in order to accommodate the different behaviors and thinking that come about from such changes in their students. “The adolescent brain is still developing and therefore requires different brain compatible strategies for learning” (Sun Protection Outreach by Students, n.d., p. 7). Increased Learning through Visuals In applying a lesson plan I have used as a middle school English language teacher, I teach only using English with minimal use of the local language the students are accustomed to. In order to reinforce what is taught, I incorporate visuals and graphics in my classes. SPOTS (n.d.) mentions, “We take in more information visually than through any other sense” (p. 8). The occipital lobe of the cerebrum processes visual information compares it to what is stored in the memory and makes a match in order to determine recognition (Schunk, 2012). [Show More]
