DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: LIVING ON ONE DOLLAR Name:______________________ 1) Briefly explain Chris and Zach’s project. Where will they go? How long will they stay? Why are they doing it? To live on... one dollar a day, in Chino's rural Guatemalan village for a summer. They took it as an opportunity to learn for themselves what it means to live on a dollar a day compared to his everyday life. (to see the reality of extreme poverty first-hand) went to the village of Pena Blanca. 2) How many people in Guatemala live in poverty? Does this number surprise you? 7 out of 10 people, 3) Describe their first day. What does their house look like? How do they settle in? Bussed to the village and arrived at a small hut with no flooring, they had to dig a small crevice to try and make a fire but it didn’t work. They slept on the ground which is the soil. 4) How will Chris and his friends replicate living in poverty? How will they distribute their funds? Why did they choose to manage their funds in this way? They decided to make their funds unpredictable, so they did not know if they would get paid that day and how much they would get, which replicated what many Guatemalans experience as they are informally employed as farmers and workers.
