EDUC 5210 Unit 3 Discussion Schunk (2012) said “Learning and thinking occur in the context of learners’ beliefs about cognition, which differ as a function of personal, social, and cultural fact... ors” (p. 257). Under social and constructivist approaches, the concept presented in this sentence will have very similar interpretations. Social Learning Approaches Ktheuer (2008) explains the concept of reciprocal determinism, which aligns with Schunk’s (2012) quote. She explains that within this framework, environmental (social) factors and personal factors influence behavior, or learning. Social factors such as parents in the child’s environment will present observable behavior that the student will socially deem as acceptable, and therefore duplicate what they have observed--having been learned. The role of communication skills is critical under this theory as students both receive social cues that affect their learning and convey the learning they have obtained through communication. Without having the functionality to interpret or communicate understanding students may arrest or regress in their learning. Schunk (2012) explains this concept through APA learner-centered principles in light of social learning (p. 264). Constructivist Approaches Schunk’s (2012) quote was mentioned within the context of constructivism, to further explain how implicit theories formulate and influence learner’s motivation and viewpoints of efficacy. “By the time children enter school, they hold a wide range of implicit theories that they have constructed and that cover most situations.” (Schunk, 212, p. 259). This process occurs through interaction with primary caregivers, siblings and peers. Eventually, upon entering the classroom, this process will occur with the interaction of teachers and additional peers. Again, there is a social component as to how their ideas, or cognition, about thinking and learning is formulated. However, there is a more rationale, decisive way that this cognition is executed behaviorally. McEachern (2016) refers to this cognitive process as the “mental manipulation of ideas”. The role of communication skills in the constructivist approach is critical, as the cognition of learning and thinking not only influences behavior, it fundamentally changes the mindset of the learner.
