Adil Hussaini Charges, Electric Fields and Potential Lab Adapted from Loeblein 4/30/20 and Aubry Farenholtz documents. https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/charges-and-fields 1. Two balloons we... re rubbed on a sweater like in the Balloons and Static Electricity and then hung like in the picture below. Explain why you think they move apart and what might affect how far apart they will be. Insert screenshot with charges. The two balloons move apart because they both contain one very negative side as seen in the lab demonstration. Since opposite charges attract, similar charges repel. After being rubbed on the sweater, the two balloons developed very negative charges by stealing electrons from the sweater seen by the sweater being very positively charged. The distance between the balloons is dictated by the difference in negative charges in the two balloons. The green balloon contains more electrons than the yellow balloon because it was rubbed first. If the balloons had a similar number of electrons, the distance between them would be larger than it is now. 2. Watch the short video demonstration of Electric Field Hockey . a. Why can you make a goal without hitting the puck? You can score a goal without hitting the positively charged puck by placed a positive charge behind the puck, causing the similarity in charges to repel the puck into the goal. Additionally, placing a negative charge near the goal will attract the puck into the goal. b. Why can you use either a positive charge or a negative charge to move the positively charged puck? Both charges can successfully cause the puck to enter the goal. A positive charge can repel the puck into the goal when placed behind the puck. A negative charge can attract the puck into the goal when placed next to the goal. c. What do you think would happen if you use 2 charges instead of one to make the puck move? If two charges are used instead of one, a variety of responses can happen depending on what charges are used and where they are placed. If two positive or negative charges are placed on opposite sides of the puck, nothing will happen. If a positive charge is placed on one side and a negative is placed on the other, the puck will rapidly move to the negative charge. Additionally, if both charges are the same sign, the puck will move much faster than compared to a single [Show More]
