Chemistry > Experiment > CHEM 120 OL Lab 11- Carbohydrates The sugars that feed us (All)
Part 2: Report and Reflection Purpose: Describe in complete sentences and in your own words, the purpose of this experiment. The purpose of this experiment is to understand how your digestive syste... m absorbs carbohydrates. Observations: Record three observations from the simulation. 1. Chemical formula for fructose is C6H12O6 2. Fructose and glucose have the same chemical formula bu their atoms are bound together in a different way. 3. Orange juice contains countless sucrose molecules. Answer the questions below: 1. Complete the table below: (2 points) Number Name of the Carbohydrate Is the carbohydrate a monosaccharide, disaccharide, or polysaccharide Names of component sugars 1 Maltose disaccharide glucose 2 Lactose disaccharide Glalactose and glucose 3 Starch Polysaccharide glucose 4 Cellulose monosaccharide glucose 2. Describe, in your own words, the main functions of carbohydrates in the body. It provides the body energy. Store energy and build macromolecules and spare protein and fat for other uses. 3. Reflection: Consider what you learned from this simulation. Reflect on three to four key concepts that you learned in this lab exercise. How could the lessons learned in this virtual lab relate to a real world situation in the community/world or your future career? Be specific in your answer (this should require 5-10 sentences). Based on what I learned from this simulation. I learned that plants produce glucose with th energy obtained from photosynthesis. Every living being produces many different enzymes that catalyze chemical reactions. Amylase cuts the starch into shorter chains. I can use this in a real world situation by helping me get ready for a marathon and know which foods can help me resist longer or if I want to lose weight it will help me control my carbohydrate intake.
