Safety and Recovery Plans Role in Improving Patient Outcomes In mental healthcare discharge planning for the acutely ill is an essential aspect of the care plan for the patients. Allowing patients t... o be involved in their care has been proven to improve patient outcomes. Implementing the use of Safety and Recovery plans allows patients to be actively involved in their own care and discharge planning. The use of the safety and recovery plan requires patients to formulate plans to maintain safety and remain on the path to recovery. Formulating this plan requires patients to discuss their knowledge of their illness as well as a plan to continue to remain safe. After completing this form patients are able to have a reference upon discharge and are able to refer to the formulated plan during a time of need. “The intent of safety planning is to provide a pre-determined list of potential coping strategies as well as a list of individuals or agencies that veterans can contact in order to help them lower their imminent risk of suicidal behavior. It is a therapeutic technique that provides patients with something more than just a referral at the completion of suicide risk assessment” (Department of Veterans Affairs, 2008). [Show More]
