NR 394 Week 5 Discussion: Reflection on Cultural Perspective (Graded) Culturally Relevant Methods Culturally Relevant Methods (CRM) are responsive teaching methods and practices used to engage d... iverse learners with different backgrounds. As an educator, these methods are essential to empower students as well as understand their learning needs by establishing an inclusion as it relates to the students, having a positive attitude that allows the children to choose activities to observe or showcase their strengths, and to foster self-esteem and confidence by teaching different ways for them to understand. Anti-bias Curriculum “Children are aware of differences in color, language, gender, and physical ability at a very young age. Numerous research studies about the process of identity and attitude development conclude that children learn by observing the differences and similarities among people and by absorbing the spoken and unspoken messages about those differences (Hohensee & Derman- Sparks, 1992).” The anti-bias curriculum aims to nurture all children from the start of preschool to embrace and respect diversity. As an educator, your classroom environment is a start to implementing anti-bias curriculum by use of books, materials, and images on the wall that support and promote a positive approach and portray the importance of different race, social status, gender, or cultural background. Implementing anti-bias activities that build self-awareness and highlights each uniqueness. Diverse Family Structure Early childhood education (ECE) is where a child will experience its first observation of diversity. Diverse family structures are adoptive families, foster parents, single or married parents, blended families, immigrant families, LGBT parents, unmarried, polyamorous parents, or non-parent/guardians such as grandparents is a child’s curiosity to identity development. As an educator, it is crucial for me to be inclusive to the many types of families that I may encounter in my classroom to keep open communication. I want to have the flexibility to accommodate families and students as well as being impartial by making my class accessible to both families and students. According to Dawn Kurtz, Ph.D. chief program officer at Child360, the most natural approach to create an environment is to embrace diverse families as a whole (Flavin, 2018). Multicultural Education Multicultural education is to acknowledge or respect the identity of one’s own culture, learn about other people's background those different from them, their communities, and to limit or even destroy biases and stereotypes in ECE. During the Piaget (1960) preoperational stage, children learn through concrete experiences by being comfortable with people who are different based on their race, ethnicity, religion, ability, and language (Wardle, 2008). As an educator, infusing curriculum in a classroom environment and home-based activities that excepts all races where teaching methods have differentiation to accommodate the learning styles of each student and their families.
