Document Content and Description Below

Introduction to Nutrition, Health, and Wellness As a health care provider, why do I have to take a Nutrition, Health, and Wellness course? Nutrition impacts every aspect of your health. In this learn... ing activity we will discuss nutrition and the different nutritional therapies utilized in the management of gastrointestinal disorders. This learning activity will guide you to identify the function of food, understand the concepts of nutrition to support healthy eating and living, and develop skills to educate and promote health, wellness, and disease prevention with your clients. Health Promotion For the body to function, maintain, and support optimal health and wellness, a client needs to consume adequate amounts of which substance? The body needs the necessary amounts of all nutrients for efficient functioning, maintenance, and overall health and wellness. Water and vitamins are needed, but each represents only one type of nutrient. Supplements are not always necessary because sufficient nutrients can often be obtained from food sources. Your response is correct! Dimensions of Health Health care providers explore six dimensions of health to create a holistic health picture in nutritional therapy. Per your learning resources, what are the six health dimensions and defining characteristic(s) that support nutritional health? Physical health: The efficiency of the body to function appropriately, to maintain immunity to disease, and to meet daily energy. Intellectual health: The use of intellectual abilities to learn and to adapt to changes in one’s health. Emotional health: The capacity to easily express or suppress emotions appropriately Social health: The ability to interact with people in an acceptable manner and sustain relationships with family members, friends, and colleagues. Spiritual health: The cultural beliefs that give purpose to human existence, found through faith in the teachings of organized religions, in an understanding of nature or science, or in an acceptance of the humanistic view of life. Environmental health: The external factors that affect our health and well-being, including the physical context within which one lives and works as affected by determinants of ethnicity, education, income, and occupation, and extending to the larger environment of safeguarding natural resources to reduce exposure to preventable hazards. Your response is correct! Nutritional Support What is the best course of action to provide the body sufficient amounts of vital nutrients? Eating a variety of foods from each of the food groups increases the chance of obtaining adequate amounts of vital nutrients needed to support health and wellness. Maintaining an ideal body weight does not guarantee adequate nutrient intake. Following the same general food pattern each day could actually limit vitamin and mineral intake because the assortment of foods is likely to be limited. Choosing foods high in fiber and low in cholesterol does not necessarily result in an adequate intake of vitamins and minerals. Your response is correct! A Healthy World Nutrition is the foundation for health and wellness and helps us to live longer, healthier lives, as well as aids in the prevention of chronic diseases. Research has shown that the food we eat and how much we weigh has been directly related to our personal health status. We know that a healthy diet helps us reduce our risks for many health conditions and illnesses, yet, we still see chronic health problems continue to affect many of us. Unfortunately, it is at an epidemic proportion. Take the time to review A Healthy Diet, A Healthier World, as the World Health Organization aims to raise awareness and contribute to the global discussion and action to achieve better health through nutrition. Nutrient Categories Nutrition is the study of nutrients and the processes by which they are used by the body. Nutrients are substances in foods required by the body for energy, growth, maintenance, and repair. Nutrients to support health and wellness can be divided into the following six categories. Take the time to review their characteristics in your learning resources. In future learning modules, you will review the categories in more depth, to include an understanding that any one food contains many nutrients. Identifying a food by a single nutrient is misleading, as food contains many nutrients to promote health. Nutrient Overview Carbohydrates are the major sources of fuel and fiber. Proteins provide nitrogen and function in structures throughout many body systems. Fats are the components of all cells and have a role in hormone production. Vitamins assist other nutrients through digestion, absorption, metabolism, and excretion. Minerals serve in structure and affect fluid balance, which influences muscle function and the central nervous system and Water is the most important nutrient; we can only live a few days without it. Your response is correct! Mindful Eati [Show More]
