Question: 21) Describe teaching strategies that are most effective for learning in the affective domain of learning. There are many learning strategies that are used for an educational intervention... s which involve selecting specific methods and tools that are suitable for each education session. The nurse will need to set the audience up for a successful class. As the book, Health Promotion Throughout the Life Span, describes "the level of learning to be achieved becomes complex, the educational strategies and methods selected involve the individuals in more active application and analysis of the content"(Edelmen, Kudzma, Mandle, 2014). The teaching methods and strategies used will depend on the age, race, class and learning capability of the recipients. The session should be geared towards the ability of the learner to understand and apply what is being learned. Of the three learning domains, Cognitive, Affective, and Psychomotor, the affective domain is specifically based off of feelings and emotions such as, expression of positive feelings, attitudes, and values toward changing the health behavior (Edelmen, Kudzma, Mandle, 2014). Some great teaching methods are role modeling, discussions, role playing, and simulation games. First thing to do when teaching by the affective domain is role modeling. Role modeling will give the audience an audio and/or visual of what is being taught. The nurse educator will use a prop to show them how to use the item being described and explain its importance and features. This makes them feel comfortable with the information being seen or heard from a nurse professional. This should set the tone and atmosphere of the audience at ease. The second step in teaching, would be to have a discussion. Ask rhetorical questions and ask the audience what they think, just to get the discussion going. Some people are shy and do not want to look "stupid" for asking a question. One important thing to note is if someone shows signs of negativity towards the learning experience. In that circumstance, maybe take them aside and ask them how they feel about the information after the session. Give them an opportunity to express how they feel without any embarrassment. The third step, is to role play. Role paying is a very useful teaching strategy. Role playing helps people do things first hand which helps them to remember the information better. Learners are audio, visual, and kinesthetic, therefore we have to attend to each learning style. The role playing can help people remember better and also get people to ask questions that may not have thought of previously. Lastly, is the simulation games. Games such as, bingo, board games, or on the computer help to get people to repeat the information and get their memory working to remember what they are learning. We have to keep in mind the different audiences we have. Children or young adults may prefer this method to role playing. [Show More]
