Why do we need to eat food? Food provides us with over 40 substances that it cannot product on its own, therefore we must eat food to get those 40 substances. These substances provide a source of energy and help with growth and maintenance of our bodies. 2. How do you think our bodies break food down into useful nutrients? Our digestive system breaks down the foot we eat into useful nutrients through digestion. The process of digestion is composed of many different parts. These parts include mouth, in which our teeth mechanically break down food, the esophagus which transports the food from our mouth to our stomach, the stomach and small intestine further break down the food and large intestine, anus and rectum help remove the waste from our bodies. Gizmo Warm-up The digestive system is a group of organs that does three things:  First, the digestive system breaks food down into useful nutrients, a process called digestion.  Next, the nutrients move into the bloodstream, a process called absorption.  Finally, the leftover waste is removed from the body, a process called elimination. With the Digestive System Gizmo™, you can arrange the organs of the digestive system any way you like. To begin, look at the organs on the Large Organs tab. Place your cursor over each organ to learn more about it. 1. Which organs allow nutrients to be absorbed? The small intestine during the stages of jejunum and ileum and the large intestine 2. Which organ stores and compacts waste before it is eliminated? Rectum 3. Which two organs help to break food down mechanically? Mouth & Stomach [Show More]
