Complete the First Section of the course template and submit. (Keep this section attached to Weeks 2 and 3 assignments.) ● Week 2: Statistical Analysis of Community Health Problem. Complete the Second Section of the course template and submit. (Keep this section attached to Weeks 1 and 3 assignments.) ● Week 3: Community Health Nursing Intervention. Complete the Third Section of the course template and submit. By now, you should have Sections 1-3 as one whole document. ● Each section of the course template is submitted on a WEEKLY basis, depending on which week you are working on. DO NOT wait to submit all three sections at the end of the third week. ● Please note that students are not to make any changes to the content of the course template, for example, removal of questions or examples imbedded in the response box of the template. ● Removal of the questions or examples imbedded in the response box of the template is considered tampering with the content and will result in a 10-point grade deduction per assignment. Windshield Survey and Key Informant Interviews 2 Assignment #1 Student Name: _Marci Morales____________________Date: _9/27/18__________ Name of Community or Zip Code: _79423____________________ Module One (Week One): Part One Windshield Survey and Key Informant Interviews Please complete the following information on this template about the community you have selected. If you do not use this template there will be a 10- point grade penalty per assignment, and you will be required to resubmit within 48 hrs. You may increase the size of the blocks on the template by continuing to type within each section. Use as much space as necessary to provide your answers. Elements Descriptors Physical Environment Make sure you address fully what you observed, and NOTE if something was not found within your community area. ● Boundaries What defines the boundaries? Roads, water, railroads. Is the area known for a particular name? What area is this community located in? The area code 79423 is defined by roads. There are several roads that define the area, including highway 87, FM 1585, slide road, south loop 289, CR 1940, FM 41, and CR 2049. The area is not a clear-cut square. This area is also known as that Chaparral community located in South Lubbock, TX. ● Housing and Zoning What is the age of the houses? Describe type of construction material, appearance, and general condition. Do you see single family housing? Multi-family housing? This area in Lubbock is newer. Many of the houses are between 1 to 10 years old. There are many new houses and buildings being built in this area at this time. The housing in this area is mostly single-family housing. There is a small number of apartments and duplex’s as well. ● Common Meeting Places Where do people in the neighborhood hang out? Who hangs out there and what hours of the day? Many people in this area are families with small children. The most popular gathering spot for the families is a Charles A Guy Park. Popular 3 meeting times are usually between the hours of 5-7 on the week days and on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. There are very few people out past dark in this area. ● Indicators of Growth or Decline Is this a “thriving” community or does it look “run down?” Is there new or ongoing construction? Businesses and Industries coming to the area? Are buildings, roadways, and public areas clean and wellkept. Do you see dirt, trash, or graffiti? This community is thriving and growing. It is considered to be newer and more updated than many other areas in town. There are many new homes, a new elementary school, and several new strip areas being built in the area. The neighborhoods are very clean and yards are usually well maintained. There is little trash and no graffiti. Living in west Texas, there will always be dirt and dust. ● Employment Opportunities What places for employment are there is this area? Name the businesses and industries in this area. This area contains many public and a private school, Market Street, Walmart, and urgent care clinics including Star ER and Covenant Health Plus. There is a Kohls shopping center, and a couple of nail and hair salons nearby. ●Transportation How to people get from one place to another? Is public transportation available? How timely is it? Personal autos? Bikes? Walking? Lubbock does have public transportation available, but most people in this area use personal vehicles for transportation. There is rarely a public bus spotted on this particular side of town, unless it is a school bus. Taxi’s are very uncommon, but Uber’s are used more and more frequently. People Make sure you address fully what you observed and NOTE if something was not found within your community area. ● Race and Ethnicity What is the majority racial group represented? What is the majority ethnic group represented? Describe the distribution of gender, approximate ages, single families, multiple families, generational families? This area contains mostly Caucasian and Hispanics. There are probable equal male and female as most people in this area appear to be married 4 living in single family homes. There are many children. Most people appear to be in their late twenties to early forties. ● Cultural Characteristics What cultural similarities or differences do you observe? Languages spoken? Clothing? Ethnic eating places? Culturallybased celebrations? Signs in languages other than English? Most people in this area speak English. There are very few signs noted that are in Spanish. These signs were located at a local church and another at a private school in the area. Many people have been observed wearing various outfits. Majority wear business attire, while some have been spotted wearing scrubs. On the weekends many people are spotted wearing workout style clothing. Places to eat in the area are Mexican food restaurants such as Gordito’s and Abuelos. There is also several American restaurant’s in the area that serve a variety of foods but are most know for there hamburgers. Celebrations in this area that are big are Easter, Christmas, and even Halloween. ● Lifestyle Healthy Behaviors What healthy lifestyle behaviors do you observe? Do you see people exercising, wearing helmets when biking, seat belt usage, using trash cans for garbage disposal, healthy eating practices? Many people are observed walking their dogs or taking morning jogs. There are always children out riding bikes and they always have helmets on for the most part. There isn’t much trash noticed in the area, and there are trash cans located throughout the parks and walking areas. The garbage trucks come twice a week. Eating practices are not observed, but there is a Healthy Meals to Go that seems popular. Seat belt usage is common in the community. ● Lifestyle Risk Behaviors What unhealthy lifestyle behaviors do you observe? Do you see people practicing risky lifestyle behaviors such as drinking alcoholic beverages, smoking, fighting? Do you see signs of violence, gang activity, drug use, criminal activity, and bars on doors and/or windows? Do you see overweight/underweight persons? Do you see children unattended playing out in the streets? Do you see any signs of homelessness? Street people? Describe gender, age, and race/ethnicity of persons observed. There is not any gang activity in the area or drinking or smoking observed. Criminal activity is fairly low in this community. There are not bars on windows and no signs of homelessness in the area.
