Obesity • Obesity is a serious health concern that continues to effect people throughout the United States • Affects overall health leading to further disease complications • Costly health care expenses • Reduces the nations ability for a productive workforce • Impacts the armed forces and military readiness (CDC, 2020) Background Rates of Obesity • In 2018, 42.4 % of Adults in the U.S. were obese • From 2000- 2018 the rate of obesity increased 12% • Severe Obesity increased by 4.5% • 18.5 % (13.7 million) of Children/Teens are obese • Obesity related annual medical costs in the U.S. are estimated at $147 billion/year. Complications •Type 2 Diabetes •High Cholesterol •Increased risk for heart attack and stroke •Certain Cancers •Metabolic Syndrome •Mental & Emotional health issues (CDC, 2020) Landscape • Healthcare Providers • The Food & Beverage Industries • Health Insurance Companies • Politicians and lobbyists that support obesity awareness Involved parties include: Key Stakeholders Healthcare Providers • Key players in prevention and treatment with an interest in patient health concerns • Patients and/or family members lack motivation • Practice restraints • Lack resources • Lack confidence to have discussions needed to change behaviors Health Insurance Companies • Most companies do not cover or reimburse for obesity treatment • Not considered a disease • Pay for conditions caused by obesity • Medicare and Medicaid coverage • Obesity increases insurance premiums • Have an interest in improving (Rhee, Kessl, Lindback, Littman, & El- individuals health Kareh, 2018) (Mylona et al., 2020) More Key Stakeholders Food & Beverage Industry • Large contribution to the obesity epidemic • Employ marketing campaigns to entice consumption • Target vulnerable populations • Use advertisements to make consumption more attractive • Fail to release health concerns related to consumption Politicians & Lobbyists • Interest in reducing healthcare costs • Introduce programs to reduce obesity • Affordable Care Act • Obesity Act of 2019 • H.R. 1530 • S. 595 (Cedeno, 2019) (Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services, n.d.)
