But due to infringement of other company’s patent (one of those companies include Apple), Samsung’s reputation has dropped. As a result, has to pay a large sum of money. Though Samsung is the largest technology business in the world, and the smartphones have good sales, the profit margin is too low, due to low pricing. I think that Samsung has the wrong members on the project leadership team, because the company is sued too often. Since they have so many subsidiaries, its stains the proper production of one. Reshuffling the management to follow the path of technological innovations, or collaborate, if necessary, would be of great assistance. He wanted everybody who was even not familiar with a computer, would need it; he wanted to make a computer a part of people's everyday life. Steve thought that the corporate atmosphere of Apple was not conducive to pursuing his goals, so he decided to create a separate devision for the project. This team was absolutely autonomous. Being the project manager of Macintosh and a senior manager of Apple, Steve Jobs controlled all the resources that supported the project and himself evaluated each member's contribution to the team's success. The team was isolated from the company and established its own culture. Jobs even allowed the team to hang a pirate flag on their building. I think, Jobs chose absolutely the right direction to work on his new project. A breakthrough in innovations can't take place in a routine surroundings. To think outside of the box one needs to create a special working atmosphere to encourage creativity. To my mind, the ideal scenario of collaborative team is working on the development project in a decentrilized department of the company with organic or mixed structure under the control of project manager with the multilingual skills. Steve Jobs did take the Macintosh development team away from the general company of Apple. This move helped the team to create a new product without the influence of others in the company. It was discovery at its best and it proved successful. The structure of Steve Jobs team was heavyweight but had a great deal of direction from Jobs himself. Apple computer did quite well with the Macintosh for many years. It was in the mid to late 1990's that Apple started to lose revenue and fade as a company. So Steve Jobs took the same ideas that helped develop the Macintosh and applied them to an entirely new product, the IPOD. This was out side the realm of Apple, and dealt with music. Knowing that the IPOD wouldn't carry Apple for long, Steve Jobs created yet another development team and introduced the IPHONE which was an immediate success much like the Macintosh. Following that Jobs again introduced a computer oriented product, the IPAD, or tablet computer. It's quite apparent that Steve Jobs used the same type of development team for all the new products. It is a great shame that Steve Jobs died. Since his death Apple Computer has been struggling to develop successful new ideas. In reality, not everyone in a company would understand an idea, which can be brought to reality. There may be multiple set backs, negative talks, which of course would certainly bring a defeat to the investment or bring no investment at all. The selection of the persons with the right mind set and vision as Steve was necessary. The team that would be willing to listen and carry out tasks as expected and handling them with a positive manner, are the ones that Steve could rely on - which is just what he did. I feel that he chose the right team and made his devices as best as he could; save for a few hiccups in the organization growing. Curious though, I didn't know he let some of his staff hang up pirate flags on the building; sounds great to me. He tried to inflate the team with creative business values, calling them fighters and artists, while the other Apple workers were dummies. The team was even in a separate building and this is where Steve hung a pirate flag: "better be a pirate than join the Navy," he said -- meaning the Navy was the rest of Apple. Lisa was the first GUI computer aimed at personal business users. For a small amount you could own the first desktop computer that let you use a mouse to fiddle with files on a digital desktop with a processor clocked at 5 MHz and 1 MB of RAM. When the contruction is done, the project manager has all the information needed to combine every department's resources and make sure that, for example, an electrical appliance doesn't fall at the same place as a mechanical pipe. In this scenario, I don't believe there is any use of removing people from their functional department so that they could be collocated or dedicated to work with the project manager. I also think that lightweight team structure is the most effective for construction projects, unless the firm is rather small and the CEO of the company is the project manager at the same time. Then a functional team structure will work. Cross-functional collaboration can take place with lightweight structure. For example, the company receives a project to remodel the house. Then HVAC specialists can't start their work until all painting work in the house is done; or, electric specialists can do some work in cooperation with HVAC specialists if they set up all in-house communications from the scratch. Respond Collapse Mark as Read RE: New Product Development Teams Miguel Rodriguez Email this Author 2/12/2016 11:39:33 PM Modified:2/13/2016 7:49 AM I found this online about New Product Development strategy. New product development is an important way for businesses to stay ahead of the competition and continue to appeal to the changing needs of existing customers. In addition, new product development can open up new marketing channels and help to increase market share. There are a variety of strategies that can be used for effective product development. Customer Needs A classic strategy for product development is simply focusing on customer needs. "Necessity is the mother of invention" they say, and this is certainly true when it comes to new product development strategy. Having a problem and coming up with a solution to solve that problem has generated a wide range of new product ideas from the wheel to the Twitter applications that pop up virtually every day. Spot a need and then take steps to fill it. For my example, I think about Honda and Toyota as car manufactures. They may think about safety, gas efficiency, low cost or affordability with their vehicles. They have to go back to their customer base to see what their customer wants. Brand Extension Brand extension is a common strategy for new product development. Brand extension simply involves using a commonly known brand name to introduce another similar, but different product. For instance, Arm & Hammer Baking Soda extended its brand to toothpaste. Sometimes extensions work well; other times the extensions are too different from the original brand to appeal to consumers. Dove soap, for instance, developed a shampoo that failed to resonate with consumers. Again with the company Honda, there are different specifications of what types of cars people are looking for. The color, size, shape, for example of a particular model. If the car has leather or cloth seats, power options, different engine types; These can be an extension of a current popular model from Honda. I was thinking about the Accord or Civic. There can be hundreds of examples of brand extension to already known product. Technology Companies that can strategically identify opportunities to capitalize on technology to provide products and services more conveniently, less expensively and in new ways, can stay ahead of the curve and avoid the unfortunate situation of having their products and services become obsolete. A good example of this in recent years is the evolution of videotapes and then DVDs that could be rented at stores, to the mailing of DVDs to consumers in their homes and now to the move toward online rentals. While businesses can be negatively impacted by disruptive innovation if they fail to change with a changing environment, alert businesses can create strategic new product offerings to capitalize on technology. Car companies can go into technology for the future. From driver-less cars, crash avoidance, lane change warnings, newer ABS technology that can be more efficient on cars brakes and safety. Making cars safer to drive in the future can save lives, avoid accidents, and less property damage. website used:http://smallbusiness.chron.com/examples-product-development-strategy-3219.html Respond Collapse Mark as Read New Product Development Teams SravanKumar Pola Email this Author 2/13/2016 8:45:48 AM A website designer might be working with business managers and network specialists to create a storefront whilst another website designer is working with different business managers but maybe the same network specialist on an Intranet application for presenting internal management information on sales - both as part of the same project. A good example is the resdesigning of the Dell computer that uses standardized parts that can be made by any company. Since the parts are standardized, the work done does not have to be done within the same company to improve the structure of the computer, it's usually done outside the company. Once all the parts have been improved, they can be put togethor without any adjustment because they will fit snugly. The members of this team are called Functional team memebers. In the next phase, managers will assign specific roles for members in a functional team so that they can work independently and efficiently to perform specific duties like payroll, cost accounting, budgeting accounts payable, credit and collections. There has to be explicit instructions to determine how this group of workers will work togethor to avoid unnecassary expense. At times, there may be clash of opinioins within a group and when that happens, the manager will put a lightweight team togethor to handle the project. In describing an autonomous team, it should be emphasized that it is an extraordinary tool used to create a new economic model to make a profit in a global market. An example of work done by an autonomous team is the Target Department store which was created to survive the disruption of department stores. In this team structure Project Manager has full control. The Harvard Business Review reveals in a lengthly article a number of negatives about working as a team. Most of the time team members do not agree on what they are supposed to be doing with the team. Research has shown that most teams under perform due to lack of coordination and general motivation. So there is no conclusive proof that teams actually get work done faster. A team is often in competition with other teams which tends to hamper progress. Teams need to be bounded but quite often the CEO creates teams with vague boundaries. Chief executives also often make up teams with little or no concern for the team members thus making them dysfunctional. The Harvard Business Review says that in instances teams can create magic, but also adds "Don't count on it". If you are the team leader and backstabbing is an issue, suggest that the team come up with a rule. Example: if there is any backstabbing among team members and they can’t resolve it on their own, it goes before the team leader. 2) Interrupting. This is a common challenge in meetings. Have the team come up with a rule such as, “no one is allowed to speak until the other person finishes and you raise your hand.” 3) “Tangents.” Someone going off on tangents in meetings. If you are the team leader, tactfully ask the rest of the group if they want to hear any more about the issue being discussed.” If not, let that person know they can talk with you privately after the meeting. Remember tact and diplomacy. 4) Not sharing job knowledge. This is so important it should be in every employee’s job description. Respond Collapse Mark as Read RE: Why teams don't work Victoria Sosunova Email this Author 2/16/2016 8:53:49 AM Pearl said, "teams are put together so that projects could be completed at a much quicker pace". Let me give you an example when the timetable of the project was nearly broken because the work was being done by a team, not by individuals. At one of my previous classes the students were to write a group course project. We were divided into the groups of four, we didn't have opportunity to choose the team members, so our group was rather diverse. I think, that was the purpose of doing the project in a team - to learn how to work with colleagues of diverse background, knowledge, and type of character. So, one of our colleagues started procrastinating the participation in the discussion of the project. There were only promises to participate in the project "next week" and no real actions. So, we had to do her part of the project since we were responsible students and didn't want to fail because of one weak link of our chain. I found group project to be more difficult to accomplish than doing the project individually, because each of us had different style of thinking and presentation of the material, and we had to build our wording smooth and understandable. Another advantage and disadvantage at the same time was that all three of us were leaders (let's say, project managers) and at the beginning each of us had his/her own vision of the project. Fortunately, we quickly overcame the stage of "forming-storming" of the team, allocated the roles, and our work done was highly evaluated by our Professor. So, I would agree with William on opinion that "there is no conclusive proof that teams actually get work done faster". The speed of fulfillment depends on the project or on the team members working on it. For example, in programming, when the code is divided into subroutines - yes, writing the program in the team may significantly shorten the time of working on the project. Team's are primarily put together to take advantage of the knowledge and experience diversity. For complex projects, it may not be possible to get work done by an individual working alone. For example, consider developing software for trading in securities. The software needs to confirm to many requirements, such as algorithms for placing orders, accounting of transactions, compliance to regulatory requirements such as anti-money laundering and rules set-up by the exchange and many more such requirements. In this case it would be very impractical to expect just one individual to have knowledge of these different functional domains. A team of individuals from different domains working together under a project manager would be an ideal way to accomplish the task. I believe that team size, selecting right team members and effective management of a team are key to a team's success or failure. People who have never been involved in a development effort are astounded by the amount of time and money that goes into a new product. Great products are not simply designed, but instead they evolve over time through countless hours of research, analysis, design studies, engineering and prototyping efforts, and finally, testing, modifying, and re-testing until the design has been perfected. Few products are developed by a single individual working alone. It is unlikely that one individual will have the necessary skills in marketing, industrial design, mechanical and electronic engineering, manufacturing processes and materials, tool-making, packaging design, graphic art, and project management, just to name the primary areas of expertise. Development is normally done by a project team, and the team leader draws on talent in a variety of disciplines, often from both outside and inside the company. As a general rule, the cost of a development effort is a factor of the number of people involved and the time required to nurture the initial concept into a fully-refined product. Sagar Tawde Email this Author 2/18/2016 7:00:43 PM Today, I am about to discuss an intense project mission initiated by ISRO, The project was titled “Mangalyaan” India’s Mass Orbiter Mission. It was primarily a technological advancement mission and was developed to perform monitoring of physical structure of Mars and its atmosphere. This project development included a team of 11-15 Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) scientists and they were the masterminds of the maiden success of this mission. Mars orbiter missions by other countries have been taking place since 1960’s and onward. The USA, Europe, and Russia got partial success sending an orbiter into Martian atmosphere but that feat was achieved after several R&D’s and spending almost billions. Even though India was a late starter in this mars mission but they were able to achieve the success with the efficient use of resources and technology and cost effective ways. To achieve such a massive feat, ISRO made sure to engage a team of well-versed scientists who had been researching extensively and were prepared to concentrate on getting desired results with minimal resource availability. The type of team ISRO selected was functional on all levels from developing and designing this project mission till the successful launch. I believe the foremost reason this mars mission by ISRO was a success is due their observation from other countries failed attempts, not rushing their research and development and taking ample of time to study rigorously without any distortions and last the know-how of the time and resource management which made it possible for quick turnaround. India became the only country to succeed in the very first attempt. Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) spent $74 million on the project - one-tenth the cost of NASA's Maven (at $671 million) launched around the same time. I remember watching this event live on TV and Prime Minister Modi in his comments said that the cost of Mangalyaan project was less than the production budget of the movie Gravity ($100 million). Though learning effects would have played a role in the mission's success, there are some other factors as well which made Mangalyaan a technological breakthrough. For instance, China in 2011 partnered with Russia but their mission failed though Russia has previously succeeded. It is a very interesting topic and worthy of deeper reflection. Respond Collapse Mark as Read New Voice Technology Deployment Sagar Tawde Email this Author 2/19/2016 4:11:06 PM I tend to agree with the author with the theory of constructing new product development teams, she has mentioned several factors which needs to be considered while constructing a functional product development unit. I will explain with my work life experience. I was working as an on-site project engineer (Voice and Data Networking) for one of the major banks in Singapore. During my tenure with them, we had an opportunity to explore new technology related to voice IP networking and make a definite solution design which can be rolled out in the near future. Business lead approved the project and that started the major voice refresh project across Singapore and most of their APAC locations. This project was a collaboration of several internal and external teams and their joint efforts to deploy this refresh successfully. First and foremost, criteria were to figure how many teams are needed as active part of this project and sub division of this teams (team size and composition). This project was handled by project management team with a project lead who was the responsible person looking out over this project across APAC and he was needed to collaborate with other units such as voice and data project engineers, third party teams (outsourced specialist engineers and vendors), CTO teams (for project design approvals and to maintain the company and telecom standards), business project units and IT Risk & Change management etc. Project lead was responsible for effective transitions with zero or minimal downtime and errors while deploying and testing phase. This deployment was a good example of new product development team where peoples from different unit worked together as a cross functional unit to deliver the end result which in term was deploying new voice technology. From this project outcome, I learned a lot about strategic management in terms of efficient use of available resources, time management, vendor management, proper coordination at all levels to avoid delay or errors. To tackle this situation most project leads or managers try to initiate cross functional production development teams whom can work in a collaborative manner covering and backing up for other resources. But doing this project leads should not always depend on certain myths which are: 1) High utilization of resources will improve performance: sometimes this ratio can be inversely proportional when employees get easy access to plenty of resources they tend to lag behind and this in short affects the project plan. 2) Processing work in large batches improves the economics of the development process: at times when we have a big batches of product deployment and the requirement is not that great then its resulting in increased queue time because queue process time is directly proportional to the number of batches. 3) Our development plan is great; we just need to stick to it: I have come across certain scenarios where a particular project format of a company does not become functional due lack of product knowledge and resource utilization and time taken to process so we should always be flexible without project plans when and where needed. 4) The more features we put into a product, the more customers will like it: most of the consumer electronics market, add unwanted features on their mobile device to enhance its market value but doing so degrades its performance and it tends to have short life in the market. https://hbr.org/2012/05/six-myths-of-product-development Respond Collapse Mark as Read Development Project Team: APPLE WATCH OS Juan Olivares Email this Author 2/21/2016 4:15:10 PM In the design and development of the Apple Watch, according to APPLE INC., the project consisted of a specific engineering, developer, and Q & A task force in which scripts were designed, tested, and BETA'd in order to analyze the pros and cons pertaining to the interface, application functionality, and features in which APPLE developers were able to provide with the Touch force technology.
