He came to the ED with complaints of chest pain, diaphoresis, and shortness of breath. He was treated with aspirin and two doses of sublingual nitroglycerin. Creatine Kinase – this is used to detect acute myocardial infarction and to evaluate possible causes of chest pain and severity of ischemia; his result was 20 ng/mL (normal = 0- 4.9 ng/mL) Troponin – used to detect and diagnose acute MI and evaluate possible causes of chest pain; his was 2.2 ng/mL (normal – 0-0.1 ng/mL) Angina (chest pain) – Angina pectoris is the result of myocardial ischemia caused by an imbalance between myocardial blood supply and oxygen demand. Coronary artery disease – caused by plaque buildup in the wall of the arteries that supply blood to the heart. Plaque buildup causes the inside of the arteries to narrow over time.
