Document Content and Description Below

Assignment Use reliable and reputable resources to conduct your research on the Galapagos finches. Analyze the speciation of the Galapagos finches by answering the following questions below. 1. Whe... re are the Galapagos Islands located? The Galapagos islands are located about 1,000 km off the coast of South America and is a province in Ecuador. The Galapagos islands is a volcanic archipelago in the Pacific Ocean. 2. What trait variation did Charles Darwin observe after studying the Galapagos finches? Charles Darwin was studying the beak structure of finches native to the Galapagos Islands. This study of finches facilitated Darwin to publish his theory of evolution by natural selection. The trait he had observed after studying the Galapagos finches was the differences in the size and shape of the finches beaks. He speculated that new species will emerge when a factor in the environment causes a population to be divided. 3. How did Darwin explain the differences in traits? He suggested that over a long period of time natural selection could lead to changes in a species in order to better adapt the species to their environment. He also said that all traits of a species derived from a common ancestor in the past. 4. According to Darwin’s On The Origin of Species, what four factors affect evolution? Explain how each factor affects evolution. The four factors that affect evolution according to Darwin’s On The Origin of Species are variation, heritability, competition, and differential survival. Variation guarantees that there is variation or variability of population traits on which selection pressures will apply or concern. Heritability means that the traits must be able to be passed down to offsprings through gametes. Competition transpires when the individuals in the population compete for limited resources. Differential survival aspires because of competition for resources and other selection pressures. This resul [Show More]
