Document Content and Description Below

ENST/GEOG 1020: People, Places and Environments Fall 2022 Assignment #3 2a) Does there seem to be a strong correlation between HDI values and GNI values, according to Figure 1? Is it a positive or... negative relationship? Explain using four specific examples. Cite HDI and GNI values from each example provided. There is a very strong positive relationship between HDI and GNP, this point is most proved by the following countries, Norway, Switzerland, Albania, and Uganda. 2b) Is HDI a more accurate reflection of economic and social development when compared with GNI? Why or why not? 2c) Is there a direct link between economic development and social development? Why or why not? There is a direct link between economic development and social development of a population. 3a) Using Box 2.2 in Norton and Mercier, define arithmetic density and physiological density. Which measure may provide a more accurate representation of a country's ability to provide adequate food for its population? b) What kind of relationship exists between HDI Values and Population Density per km^2 of Arable Land (Figure 2)? Note that "arable" is term that used to describe land that is suitable for farming. Is it a positive or negative relationship? Explain using four specific examples With this dataset, there is a slight positive relationship between the HDI values and the Population Density per km^2 of Arable Land. In the case of Switzerland, it has both a high HDI and Arable land density. 4) Explain the causes of food shortages according to Norton and Mercier. Norton and Mercier state that there are usually three common causes that most people refer to in explanation of the food shortages, overpopulation, inadequate distribution of available supplies, and physical or human circumstances. Overpopulation is a basic idea, the more people there are to feed the more food you will need, so although there is no real proof of overpopulation, as Norton and Mercier state that densely populated places are not exactly overpopulated. Inadequate distribution of available . 5) Norton and Mercier stress the importance of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in prioritizing efforts that can help to improve the quality of life for people around the world. In addition to quality of life improvements discussed by the textbook authors, the UN stresses the importance of data gathering and analysis capacity as part of the SDGs. Why would the UN prioritize data gathering and analysis? (Hint: How did Cuba's missing GNI value impact your own analysis of Figure 1?). 6) Define Structural Adjustment Programs (SAPs)? How could SAPs impact GNI or HDI positively or negatively? 1a) 1b) Works Cited Human Geography, by William Norton and Michael Mercier, Oxford University Press, 2019 [Show More]
