A Review of Impact of Emerging Technologies on the Health and Safety Training for Construction Workers in New Zealand 1 Abstract New Zeeland’s construction industry is known for long as one of th... e sectors with high risk levels. The main causes of accidents in construction sites results from risky work environments, human error, defective devices and equipment. However, the industry is gradually adopting emerging technologies for health and safety training for construction workers. The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of new technologies in employees training in health and safety in regards to construction workers in New Zeeland. The study reviewed extensive previous literature and past studies on emerging technologies used in training workers on matters of construction health and safety like Building Information Modelling (BIM), online databases, 4D Computer-Aided Design (4D CAD) and others. Specific keywords like ‘health and safety training ’, ‘emerging/new technologies’, ‘new technologies’, ‘worksite accidents ‘and others were used for online database searches. The paper identified the new technologies and their impact on health and safety training for construction workers in New Zeeland. 2 Table of Contents Abstract..2 Table of Contents...3 Chapter 1: Introduction5 1.1 Background...5 1.2 Problem Statement.7 1.3 Research Aim and objectives.8 Chapter Two: Literature Review..9 2.1 Introduction...9 2.2 Theoretical Review9 2.2.1 Situational Analysis of NZ’s Construction Industry9 2.2.2 Emerging Technologies in Industry’s Health and Safety Training.11 2.3 Empirical Literature.12 2.3.1 Robotics and Automation..13 2.3.2 Building Information Modelling (BIM)14 2.3.3 Virtual Reality (VR)..14 2.3.4 Augmented Reality (AR)..15 2.3.5 Online Databases..16 2.3.6 3D and 4D CAD...17 Chapter Three: Methodology.19 3.1 Introduction.19 3.2 Research Design..19 3.3 Study Population..20 3.4 Data collection.21 3.5 Data analysis22 3.6 Ethical Consideration...22 Chapter Four: Findings and Discussion24 4.1 Introduction.24 4.2 Review of Previous Empirical Findings...24 4.2.1 The Use of Computer-Aided Technologies (CAT)24 4.2.2 Effectiveness of Emerging Technologies in Health and Safety Training...27 4.3 Discussion and Recommendation27 4.3.1 Discussion.27 4.3.2 Recommendation..30 3 Chapter Five: Conclusion and Limitations of the Study32 5.1 Introduction.32 5.2 Conclusion...32 5.3 Limitations of the Study..34 References35 4 Chapter 1: Introduction 1.1 Background The recent decades have experienced great global changes in terms of organizational work (Quinlan, 2014). Large organizations, in particular, are reducing employment obligations and therefore have resorted to more flexible working and employment arrangements such as outsourcing employment duties to small or less-regulated firms or employing largely precarious workforces that are in desperate need of the few available jobs (Weil, 2014). There has been a complex system of contractors, distributors, and suppliers due to outsourcing. Resultantly, the risk and dangers has been transferred to the casual laborers and workforce who are consistently searching for limited and diminishing employment opportunities. The cumulative outcome has been inadequate health and safety condition among others like decreasing benefits, increasing income inequality, and reducing wages. The construction industry is among the sectors that have resorted to increased use of contracted labor and reflect the changes to workforce arrangements that are evident in other sectors. People worldwide are exposed to exclusion, gaps, and deficits in form of underemployment and unemployment, unproductive and poor quality jobs, unsafe work environments, insecure wages, and income, denied employment rights, gender inequality, lack of representation, inadequate solidarity and protection in the face of illnesses and diseases, old age and disability (ILO, 2006:1).
