Virtual Clinical Week 2- Child Asthma Inhaler with Spacer and Mask Rhonda Gall, Student Nurse West Virginia Junior College, College of Nursing Nursing 203 2 When you have a child or toddler th... at has asthma it is not often an easy task to administer an inhaler effectively. One of the best ways to accomplish effective treatment is to utilize a spacer with a mask. This will create a seal around the mouth and nose and encapsulate the medication allowing it to be received in the lower airway where needed. The first thing you want to do is vigorously shake the inhaler. Next, take off the cap to the inhaler. Insert the inhaler to the opening designed to hold the inhaler in the one end and add the mask to the other side. Place the mask to the child’s face covering their mouth and nose with a decent seal. Activate the inhaler by pressing down on the metal piece on the top that hold the medication. Let them take five breaths in. On the fifth breath, have them to hold their breath for ten seconds if they can do so. You then remove the mask from their face and have them to exhale. It is acceptable if the child can not do the ten second breath hold. It should also be noted that the child should take five normal breaths not fast and deep breaths. This will not allow for good deposition of the medication and will also cause medication to deposite higher in the airway than desired. [Show More]
