Models Part II Postmodernist models of family therapy center around listening to and understanding the clients’ experiences and the social context that helps shape their reality. To do that effectively, it is important for the therapist to adopt a lens of cultural humility, In the first section of this paper, I attempted to adopt this same lens while reflecting on two different readings. The first reading was Shelby’s chapter on White Privilege, Pathological Shame and Guilt, and the Perversion of Morality (2019). The second reading I chose was Fish and Dallal-Ferne’s chapter titled The Semitism Schism, Revisited: Jewish–Palestinian Legacies in a Family Therapy Training Context (2019). In the second section of this paper, I describe the application of cultural humility in postmodern models and the role of therapist’s context in that application. Applying a Cultural Humility Lens to Two Readings Article on White Privilege The reason I chose the first article, White Privilege, Pathological Shame and Guilt, and the Perversion of Morality (Shelby, 2019) is somewhat complicated. It is only in the last couple of years that I have started to understand what is meant by white privilege and the role that it has played in my life to date. Despite this understanding and acceptance, I still have a negative reaction to hearing the term. Additionally, many of the people that I interact with in my current professional and social life do not understand the concept at all. Their reaction to hearing the phrase white privilege is to assume that it means they have not had to work for what they have achieved or that they had it easy. While there is some element of truth to that view, it does not capture what is meant and it understandably elicits a negative reaction especially with those who have worked hard and/or faced significant hardships and challenges. It was my hope in choosing this article to overcome some of my residual negative reactions. Additionally, I hoped it would 3 help better prepare me to communicate the concept of privilege in a more acceptable way that validates the experiences of the individual so they can be more aware its role in their own lives and society writ large. The first two paragraphs of the article really resonated with my mixed emotions on this topic and helped solidify my choice. [Show More]
