Nutrition Final Nutrition Review CH.1-6 ● Water- 9-13 cups ● Myplate- recommendations based on age, sex, activity level ● Organs of gastrointestinal tract- mouth, esophagus, stom... ach, small intestine, large intestine,rectum ● BMR- basal metabolic rate, how long it takes from food to go to cell 16-27 hours ● GI tract- digestion, absorption, metabolism ● Simple carbohydrates- monosaccharides: glucose, fructose, galactose Disaccharides: sucrose= glucose + fructose maltose= glucose + glucose lactose= glucose + galactose ● Complex carbohydrates- polysaccharides, starch, fiber ● starch - grains, legumes, root vegetables (potatoes) ● Recommended Adequate Intake: 25-38 g/day 7 ● Carbohydrates- primarily from plants ● Fats- triglyceride (glycerol & 3 fatty acids), lipid, phospholipids, sterols ● Monounsaturated fatty acid- olive oil, peanut oil, avocado, canola oil ● Polyunsaturated fatty acid- corn, wheat germ, canola, sesame, sunflower, fish, margarine, safflower ● Lipoproteins- HDL: decrease risk for coronary artery disease LDL: increase risk for coronary artery disease ● Sterol- nonessential, in animal derived foods ● Dietary fat intake- coronary vascular disease, certain types of cancer, type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension ● Complete Protein- eggs, human milk ● Incomplete protein- grains, legumes ● 9 essential amino acids - phenylalanine, valine, threonine, tryptophan, isoleucine, lysine, leucine, arginine ● 11 non essential amino acids- alanine, asparagine, aspartate, glutamate, glutamine, glycine, proline, serine ● Nonessential amino acids- made by the body ( we don’t need) ● Essential amino acids- cannot be made by the body (we need ) ● Protein differs from carbohydrates and lipids because it contains nitrogen. ● Anabolism - synthesis- to create ● Catabolism- break down CH.7-12 1.
