In more precise terms of nursing, a co... ncept refers to phenomena occurring in nature or in theory (McEwen & Willis, 2014). Concepts can be characterized in a wide range from abstract, such as hope or desire, to relatively concrete, like a car, body temperature, or pain. Concepts give meaning to a phenomenon so that is can be clearly understood. A concept can be a word or even a phrase which becomes a variable that can be used in a hypotheses being tested by research. In this case, health literacy is the concept being studied. In order to fully understand health promotion, one must understand health. Health, according to The Constitution of the World Health Organization (n.d.), “is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” Health literacy is a somewhat innovative notion within health promotion research; with new vocabulary, it’s important to make sure the whole healthcare community understands what it means so they can make sure their patients understand it too.
