QSO 300 Final Project Milestone Nissan Case Study Analysis Maryann Fredette Introduction: Surviving one of the world’s biggest earthquakes that mea... sured a 9.0 off the coast of Japan and a Tsunami with waves about 40 meters in height caused a major blow to the Japanese economy. (Schmidt/ Simchi-Levi, 2013) One of the companies affected by the natural disasters in March 2011, was the Nissan Motor Company. Nissan is one of the world’s leading automakers that has built its reputation with high quality vehicles, and reputable customer values. It wasn’t so much of how the disaster happened but how Nissan reacted to it. Nissan had to change the way they conducted business and change their entire layout to rebuild what was lost. This paper will address these changes by evaluating and assessing two critical elements, generating value and theories and techniques of Operations Management (OM). I. Generating Value A. Evaluate how the company in the case study uses operations management functions to provide products and generate value for its customers. Support your claims with examples from the case study or outside sources. Nissan needed to utilize operations management to insure proper operation of the company. Operations, marketing, and finance/accounting are the three functions basic to all organizations. (Heizer, Render, Munson 2017). Operations is the production of the marketed product; Nissan output is automobiles. Marketing is the action of creating a product or service demand, Nissan markets itself on the global market. Finance uses financial performance to track organizational performance, payment of accounts payable to secure supplies and continue production, and payments against accounts receivable for product received to continue to production process.
