Socioeconomic status is the social class of an individual or group. It is often measured as a combination of education, income and occupation. Low socioeconomic status has been linked to inequities in access to care, quality of health care and issues related to privilege, power and control (American Psychological Association, 2019). Health reform measures, such as Medicare and Medicaid are sociopolitical factors that are created to address the social determinants of health within the healthcare system (Artiga & Hinton, 2018). Evidence have shown that socioeconomic status affects patient health outcomes. Lower life expectancy, more chronic conditions, and worse overall health can be contributed to low socioeconomic status (SES)when compared to higher socioeconomic status (Arpey, Gaglioti, & Rosenbaum, 2017). The research has also shown that patients with low socioeconomic status receive less diagnostic testing and medication for many conditions (Arpey et al. 2017). This type of practice can cause distrust between the patient-provider relationship.
