A4. Discuss three or four factors (e.g., financial resources, access to care, insured/uninsured, Medicare/Medicaid) that contribute to a patient being able to manage the selected disease. A4. Man... aged Disease Factors Asthma has become a problem to more than 25 million people in the U.S. according the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (https://www.aafa.org/asthma-facts/). The factors that contribute to a patient being able to manage this disease are financial resources, access to care, education, health literacy, insurance, government assistance, support systems, cultural beliefs. Financial Resources Financial resources for asthma heavily depend on the patient’s economic stability. We will take a close look at John Doe and how he properly manages his asthma. John Doe is an middle-aged adult male who is diagnosed with asthma. Financially he must think about costs for doctor’s visits, specialist visits, prescriptions for multiple medications, prescription refill, equipment for treatment, gas for travel, urgent care visits, emergency care visits, and/or possible hospital stays. John Doe works full time at a company that provides fair insurance putting him in the middle class setting. Due to his financial standing related his work status he is able to afford healthcare through his insurance. Access to Care/Health Literacy Access to care and health literacy go hand in hand for me when it comes to managing a disease. We will continue to follow John Doe’s journey through asthma. With John having a fulltime job he is able to afford a car and pay for gas to travel to the necessary places for his asthma treatment. He has access to receive care because of his medical insurance. John understands the healthcare system by knowing which services is appropriate based on his level in which his symptoms arise. I would consider this knowledge and decision making to be health literate. John also speaks and reads English and has graduated with a college degree, so he is able to understand the education give to him upon discharge and is not afraid to ask questions when he does not understand. Support Systems/Cultural Belief Support systems and cultural belief high affect the care and treatment of a patient disease. Asthma is no different because it can affect a person every day because we need breathe in order to live. Now take that ability to breath away and see how much you can handle it on your own. It is difficult. For John, he sees the difficulty in handling the disease on his own; therefore, he turns to his family for support, including his parents, who happen to also have asthma. There is more value in the support given with people who share the same difficulties. Cultural belief also plays a role as it can influence the treatment of asthma. Joe is Mexican and in the Latino culture it is a common belief that the disease of asthma results from an imbalance between hot and cold elements (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2590764/). A4a. Explain how a lack of the factors discussed in part A4 leads to an unmanaged disease process. A4a. Unmanaged Disease Factors This study source was downloaded by 100000821916538 from CourseHero.com on 03-25-2021 17:06:23 GMT -05:00 https://www.coursehero.com/file/66597876/A4-c155docx/ This study resource was shared via CourseHero.com The 25 million people with Asthma in the U.S. battle with the factors that contribute to caring for this disease (https://www.aafa.org/asthma-facts/). Let us see how our warrior, John Doe, mismanages his asthma leading to his demise. Financial Resources/Government Assistance Financial resources depend on the economic stability of a patient with asthma. When there is a lack of stability, John Doe must look towards the government for assistance and even protection. For instance, say John loses his job. This means he loses his medical insurance and source of income to pay for his visits and prescriptions. The loss of his finances will mirror the instability of care for his asthma. This is characterized by untreated or prolonged lack of treatment of asthma attacks leading to increased emergency visits and hospitalization. Based on Congress’ Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor (EMTALA) Act, John is protected by having the opportunity to receive care for asthma, regardless financial status (https://www.acep.org/life-as-a-physician/ethics--legal/emtala/emtala-fact-sheet/). This rule also applies legal status for those who are not U.S. citizens (). Access to Care/Health Literacy I believe health literacy is a contributing factor that dictates a patient’s access to care. This same concept goes for the downfall of their care. For example, say John Doe did not finish high school, or he has a job that does not provide medical insurance due to his lack of diplomacy. The access to care is still possible with the help of Medicaid. Since John lost [Show More]
