NURS 3540: Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing(SAM HOUSTON STATE UNIVERSITY) LATEST UPDATED STUDY GUIDE Course description: This course demonstrates the relevance of psychosocial nursing concepts to al... l areas of professional practice. It provides a conceptual integration of the nursing process, theories, and research from psychosocial sciences and humanities as these relate to the care of persons with mental disorders. Clinical experience provides an opportunity for application of psychosocial concepts and methods in using the nursing process to promote optimal levels of wellness for individuals, families, and target groups. It also provides students with the opportunity to develop clinical decision-making abilities when providing appropriate and culturally relevant psychiatric/mental health nursing care. (Class: 3 hours weekly Clinical/Lab: 6 hours weekly) 5 Credit Hours. ACE statement: In this Academic Community Engagement (ACE) course, you will collaborate with an organization as part of your field experience/clinical placement and explore a variety of ways to interact with your population as you apply your knowledge and skills. It is hoped that you will see yourself as a positive force within the organization and the impact your actions will have on the population you serve in promoting health. Semester/Year: Fall 2019 Class meeting times: Lecture class meets Thursdays 3:00 p.m.-5:50 p.m. Class meeting place: (building and room number): The Woodlands Campus: TWC Building, Room 110. Professors: Laura Montgomery, MA, MSN, RN, APRN, FNP-C (Course Coordinator) Tonia Cobbs, MSN, RN Keilah Ford, MSN, RN, APRN, FNP-C, PHMHNP-BC (Clinical faculty) Clinical times: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday: Intracare 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Kingwood Pines 7 a.m. -3:30 p.m., and outside agencies as assigned. Please note, tentative dates are outlined in the detailed course calendar document. The meeting time will be varied on sim days and outside agency days. Your best plan is to keep 6:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. free on clinical days Clinical absences must be reported to the clinical instructor by telephone (not text message, voicemail or email) by 6:00 a.m. on the clinical day. After speaking directly to the clinical instructor, the student will send an email to the clinical instructor and course coordinator outlining the reason for the absence and confirming speaking directly to the clinical instructor. Failure to follow this policy will result in an unexcused absence and a grade of 0 for the clinical day. If you are scheduled at Intracare for the clinical day, your instructor is Mrs. Montgomery or Ms. Ford; if you are scheduled at Kingwood Pines for the clinical day, your instructor is Ms. Cobbs; if you are scheduled for another site, such as Aspire, Petc, or Tri-County, or Montgomery County Psychiatric Facility, your instructor is your primar [Show More]
