EDUC 5210 Written Assignment Unit 1 University of the People EDUC 5210 Written Assignment Unit 1 2 Introduction A learning environment refers to the diverse physical locations, contexts, and cultu... res in which students learn. Using my school's current curriculum, the three learning environments are used. These learning environments are independent of each other. LEARNER – CENTRED Learner-centered teaching is an approach that places the student at the center of the learning. This means that the student is responsible for learning while the teacher is responsible for facilitating the learning. The main focus is on having students actively participate in the design of the lesson and the production of activities that evidence their understanding of the material. Learner-centered instruction shifts the focus from the teacher to the student, and teachers become facilitators or guides of the learning process Where I teach, it is imperative to start lessons with the student's prior knowledge of the topic to be introduced. Every teacher follows this routine when planning their lessons. They can either begin the lesson with an open-ended question that relates to the topic, just so they can ascertain the level of understanding of the student in regards to the topic they are about introducing. As mentioned by Bransford J.D et al (2000) “A key strategy is to prompt children to explain and develop their knowledge structures by asking them to make predictions about various situations and explain the reasons for their predictions." In other cases, the teacher could begin with question games for the students to be allowed to talk about all they know about the topic. This game can also give the teacher a feel of the pupil's prior knowledge (learner-centered). It opens up an avenue for the child to think, recap and adjust to the lesson. [Show More]
