Race/Racism: o Race refers to a person’s physical characteristic and genetic or biological makeup (not scientific construct but a social construct). Race is important because society makes it important since it shapes social, cultural, political, ideological, and legal functions. o Racism: the belief that some races are superior to others by nature. Discrimination: o Occurs when people act on that belief and treat people differently as a result. This can occur because of beliefs related to factors such as race, sexual orientation, dialect, religion, or gender. Cultural Ethnocentricity vs. Cultural Relativism o Cultural ethnocentricity refers their patient, the worker may disrespect/ignore the patient’s cultural beliefs and values. o Cultural relativism is in order to be effective, one must see and appreciate the value of different cultures. This phrase was developed to refute the idea of culture ethnocentricity and states that all cultures are of equal value and needs to be studied from a neutral point of view.
