Herbal Supplements: Pharmacodynamics of Turmeric Introduction The use of herbal supplements has grown significantly in the United States over the last two decades. Currently, approximately fifty-fi... ve million adults use herbs or supplements with the belief that they are safer to use than synthetic medications, having less harmful side effects (Woo & Robinson, 2016). The purpose of this paper is to provide review for a herbal supplement, turmeric (Curcuma longa); providing the pharmacodynamics for the herb; the drug-herb interactions, and scholarly, peer-reviewed research supporting the therapeutic use of the supplement. Pharmacodynamics of Turmeric A plant member to ginger, turmeric is commonly used today as a supplement for “inflammation; arthritis; stomach, skin, liver, and gallbladder problems; and cancer (National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health [NCCIH], 2016). Curcuminoids are the primary active ingredients and have a yellow color; often used in food and cosmetics. Safe oral and topical use of turmeric has been tested; however, gastrointestinal problems have occurred in long-term use or doses higher than recommended (NCCIH, 2016). Dose recommendations are up to 3.6 grams daily. Impressive preliminary studies have revealed that turmeric may 1) decrease the number of myocardial infarctions after bypass surgery; 2) aid in the pain control from osteoarthritis; and 3) calm skin irritation for post radiation treatments with breast cancer patients (NCCIH, 2016).
