Integrating Dynamic Writing and Reading with Academic Content Journals Ensuring students learn to write and read effectively is an important part of any teachers responsibilities. Throughout this co... urse, we have focused on reading and writing enhancements for the students we teach. A well-designed writing assignment will work to improve the students writing skills, enhance reading skills and improve content comprehension. According to Vacca, Vacca and Mraz (239) when including writing before, during and after reading, we encourage students to formulate ideas about what they are about to read and more critically analyze the things they have read. Assignments that incorporate both reading and writing together versus in isolation provide greater content learning opportunities. Journal Writing Assignments I teach a challenging sports medicine class. The content contained within this class is more appropriate for collegiate level students enrolled in an athletic training education program. That creates certain challenges when trying to teach this class in a high school where the learners are culturally diverse, on varied reading and writing levels and have had little prior experience with sports medicine professionals. With that in mind, I use several strategies to teach reading and writing throughout the course. I have remained focused on the knee unit from our class however this writing assignment is one I have them complete for each unit we cover. It is a digest writing assignment. I call the Sports Medicine Advisor. Students will participate in a variety of writing assignments to help them become comfortable with writing, express their knowledge in written word and develop a deeper understanding of the content.
