Lab Experiment #11 Impact Testing of Polymers City College of New York Mechanical Engineering Nafisa Alam Section 2, Group 3 Professor Jackie Li Due: 05/20/2020 Objective: To study the impact... of how changes in temperature on polymers changes the properties of the materials under impact testing. We also want to determine the glass transition temperature of some of the specimen. Equipment: 1. Instron Impact Testing Machine 2. Thermocouples with digital readouts 3. Dry ice 4. Liquid nitrogen Materials: 1. Acrylic (PMMA) 2. Plexi-glass (high density) 3. Nylon 6,6 Procedure: 1. Four identical specimens of each type of material are to be subjected to the impact test under different temperature ranges. One sample is placed in a furnace, another in solid ice, and another in liquid nitrogen. We do not place the PE sample in the furnace. 2. The first specimen is tested at room temperature and the Instron impact software records the energy required to fracture it. 3. The sample in solid ice is quickly placed on the testing machine [Show More]
