TAR 303 From Ritual to Rap: Voices of American Musical Theatre Fall 2019 TAR 303 From Ritual to Rap explores the political and artistic development of musical theatre with a focus on race, religi... on, gender, diversity, sexuality, and conflict around political struggles for equality. Marginalized voices from our culture are explored through the lens of contemporary musical theatre performances and historical record. A survey of theatrical conventions beginning with traditions of our ancient world culminating in the current form focusing on contemporary performances, and a survey of important Broadway works from Show Boat to Hamilton. This course satisfies the University’s Tier Two Arts and Diversity Emphasis requirements. There is no prerequisite. This class studies the diverse voices of musical theatre as an art form through its historical development, creation, production and impact on audiences. Its subject matter includes the effects of racism, interracial relationships, ageism, sexism, homophobia, and xenophobia. Both dominant and minority cultural groups are examined. Warning: This course contains material that includes explicit language, depictions of nudity, sexual situations and violence. Arts, Tier Two: This course emphasizes verbal, visual, musical, spatial, and kinesthetic forms of expression. Diversity Emphasis: This course represents and considers the explicit representation of gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, race and social class with a substantial quantity of course materials written by and or interpreted by members of the these targeted groups. Writing Emphasis: These courses are regular junior or senior-level courses in an academic discipline in which at least half the grade awarded is determined by written work appropriate to the academic discipline. PLEASE NOTE: For Tier Two credit, this course may be used as an Arts elective. This course is writing intensive, per the university requirements for all Tier Two courses. Student Objectives • To examine, consider, and appreciate the important influences, artistry, and craft of theatre arts. • To acquire proficient understanding of the process and practice common to theatre artists. • To achieve a greater awareness and sensitivity to the diversity of our world, our society, and the culture we participate in.2 • To obtain a broader appreciation for the diversity of our culture and the power of theatre arts to express the struggles associated with equality. • To contextualize and synthesize American theatrical experiences within the greater topic of cultural awareness and societal integration.
