Coronary Artery Disease Coronary artery disease is caused by plaque buildup in the coronary arteries; this build up over time causes the arteries to become narrow over time eventually causing damage... . Once there is damage to the inner layer of the coronary artery, plaque which are fatty deposits made up of cholesterol and other cellular waste products begin to build up where the damage was caused. If the plaque breaks or ruptures platelets begin to try and repair the artery by clumping at the site of damage, which can then cause a blocked artery (“Coronary Artery Disease”, 2015). The coronary arteries supply the heart with blood, oxygen, and nutrients. References Coronary Artery Disease. (2015).
