Watch Muxes: Authentic, Intrepid Seekers of Danger documentary Published: Rochester(N.Y.): Ethnoscope, 2006 The issues to consider are: Historical erasure- the documentary tells us about a... n indigenous community in Southern Mexico where a “third gender” is recognized and respected or at least acknowledged. Clearly there are problems to consider. For example, violence against Muxes, cultural appropriation, foreigner’s misunderstandings about indigenous history and culture. However, it seems that there are impressive amounts of social acceptance and understanding in this community. Discuss at least two of the characters in the documentary. Follow their stories and be prepared to briefly discuss their role in this educational documentary. Make sure to read the NY Times article and the FUSION blog to get background and some context to this film. Then critically review and analyze- PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ARE NOT SUMMARIZING the documentary, a summary will get you a VERY low grade. Focus on the issues presented by the people in the documentary and the brief contexts provided by the 2 accompanying articles. Some issues you may include are, violence, foreign perception, local acceptance, international renown, historical erasure (how come we don’t know about this group of people?)- What is one of the most socially progressive (role models?), lessons to learn from this documentary? Original Title 2 pages double spaced Page numbers Citations from accompanying articles (YOU MUST CITE examples- failing to do this will result in a very low grade) Two Accompanying Ariticles: NY Times article on Muxe [Show More]
