Meds on Kaplan Predictors: Acyclovir: Antiviral - S/E: HA, dizziness, seizures, diarrhea, tremors, hallucinations, Nephrotoxicity - Check liver and renal function tests - Contraindications: Breas... tfeeding/Use in caution with pts with fluid overload - S/E: Pulmonary edema, HA, tachycardia, increased salivation, back pain, flushing, urticaria Buspirone: Antianxiety - S/E: blurred vison, paradoxical anxiety, nausea - DO NOT take with antidepressants as it can cause Serotonin Syndrome Digoxin: increases myocardial contractility; treats HF and A-fib - Mimics a oarasympathetic nervous system response - Blood range 0.5-2 - Avoid Licorice Enoxaparin: Antidote: Protamine (1:1)- LMWH (Low Molecular Weight Heparin) Lactulose: Laxative; bacteria digest lactulose to produce lactic acid which creates a hyperosmotic environment that draws water into the colon and produces a laxative effect - Reduces blood ammonia levels Lithium: Mood stabilizer; used to control manic episodes of bipolar disorder - S/E: dizziness, hand tremors, impaired vision, excessive thirst, metallic like taste, urinary frequency, weight gain - N/C: Monitor blood levels 2-3x a week when started then monthly onmaintenance - Pt Teaching: fluid intake of 2500-3000 mL and adequate salt intake - Target blood level 1-1.5 - Med Interactions: Diuretics, Haloperidol, Fluoxetine, Carbamazepine, NSAIDs Phenytoin: Anticonvulsant - S/E: ataxia, nystagmus, blurred vision, gingival hypertrophy - N/C: NEVER mix with any other IV meds or dextrose - Pt Education: take with full glass of water or with meals, sweat or urine may become re-brown or pink, good oral hygiene Potassium Supp. Prednisone (what happens when dropped, used with caution with people with infection, DM) Steroid; immunosuppression - S/E: hyperglycemia, peptic ulcers, fluid retention, osteoporosis, weight gain, increased risk for infection, Increased ICP/IOP, restlessness - Administer in morning with food or milk, take before 0900; nightmares are first indication of steroid psychosis - DO NOT TAKE WITH GRAPEFRUIT JUICE!! - Vit B12 (pernicious anemia): Decrease intrinsic factor that cause decreased absorption of B12 in gastric mucosa - S/S: pallor, glossitis, fatigue, paresthesia of hands and feet,palpatations; severe HF from lifelong therapy Heparin (PTT): Anticoagulant; IV or SQ - PTT range 1.5-2 - Leave needle in place for 10 seconds after injection; DO NOT massage - Antidote: Protamine Sulfate Ferrous Sulfate: Anticoagulant; IV or SQ - PTT range 1.5-2 - Leave needle in place for 10 seconds after injection; DO NOT massage - Antidote: Protamine Sulfate Antidotes: Tylenol (Acetylcysteine), Heparin (Protamine Sulfate), Coumadin (Vitamin K)- Vitamin K: Fat soluble vitamin, ANTI-hemorrhage factor; food sources alfalfa, fats oats, wheat and rye, Atropine (Activated Charcoal), Naloxone INH/Rifampin (6-12 months for TB)- sweat and urine orange Rifampin: AntiTB - S/E: HA, pruritus, hepatitis, thrombocytopenia, reddish/orange discoloration of tears, saliva, seat sputum, feces and urine. - N/C: Monitor liver function - Pt Education: AVOID soft contact lenses as they may become permanently stained Isoniazid (INH): AntiTB - S/E: hepatotoxicity, rash, fever, peripheral neuritis - N/C: give B6 to prevent peripheral neuritis - Take before meals on an empty stomach Oxytocin (If not stopped could cause uterine rupture) Various Diets BRAT Diet for diarrhea Musculoskeletal Compartment Syndrome: Pallor, Pain, Pulselessness, paresthesia, paralysis - C- color, cap refill; M- motion/movement; S- sensation - Keep elevated AT the level of the heart ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::CONTENT CONTINUED IN THE ATTACHMENT::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: [Show More]
