(GRADED A) NR-535 Week 3 Discussion: Cultural Competence Versus Humility Initial discussion post week 3 Explain the difference between cultural competence and humility. Give a specific example of ... how this is seen in your current position or how you would implement this in the nurse educator role. According to Chen et al. (2020) cultural competence occurs when a nurse or healthcare professional demonstrates culturally competent care, and this can be achieved when the provider demonstrates sensitivity toward the patients’ culture, race, gender, and sexual orientation. Cultural humility differs from competency because it is not just an action, it is a thoughtful, lifelong process that is more than just being sensitive. It involves continuous self-reflection and critique of one’s own ideas, values, and beliefs. As well as having the ability to be empathetic and respectful of others and allowing oneself to be open and accepting to the other individuals’ perceptions (Hughes et al., 2019). I can recall as a nursing student the intimidation I felt when addressing my instructor, many of us felt that way, but when cultural humility occurs it can create an environment of respect and support, which will enhance the learning environment for all. In a classroom environment the nurse educator can implement and support cultural humility, by actively practicing it, as the saying goes practice what you preach. Also, the educator can empower the students and enhance their knowledge about cultural humility by taking an active approach and have the class participate together to develop guidelines for the entire group to abide by to reinforce cultural humility in the classroom and clinical environment (Smith & Foronda, 2019).
