PSYC-290N Week 7 Graded Discussion Topic 2 PSYC 290N Week 7 Discussion Topic 2 Erikson felt that the psychosocial task of late adulthood was that of integrity versus despair. Here, the perso... n reviews his or her life & comes to feel either despair or that life is worthwhile. What do the older adults in your life have to say about meaning in life? Do they have any advice for those younger than them on how to live a meaningful life? If so, what? If not, why not? Answer: The older adults in my personal life say that throughout our lives we make choices. Some right, & some wrong, but ultimately we need to live with those decisions, so make sure that you choose the right ones, & in doing so you will ultimately lead, a worthwhile, successful life. This fits right in with Erikson's theory of Integrity vs Despair. Adults "must come to terms with who [the/she] is & has been, how [their] life has been lived, the choices [he/she} has made, & the opportunities gained & lost." (Boyd & Bee 2014) In the event that they made the wrong choices it will lead to despair instead integrity. I think that this is a fundamental aspect of aging. A person needs to feel that their life was a success. The advice that my elders give me is to live in the moment, live in today, but live knowing that it effects tomorrow. I think that this is a really important concept to keep ahold of. As young adults, all we think about & focus on is today, this moment right now. But, if we live knowing that are actions today will impact tomorrow, hopefully, it will guide us in making good decisions today. Which will ultimately lead us to look back to a life of success. So when we do look back, rather than despair, we see integrity. As young adults we need to " Identify the activities that provide you with a sense of purpose." (Merck, 2014) Making sure that we live life will purpose will also ensure an outcome of Integrity. I think that this is an integral aspect to think about as we age, use it to keep us grounded, & making good decisions. References: 1) Boyd, D., & Bee, H. (2014). Lifespan Development.
