TheAPN Professional Development Plan Scope of Practice defines the duty a qualified healthcare professional is considered having the ability to perform under his... or her professional license as long as the required terms are followed. It outlines the actions and procedures an individual allowed under their license. Scope of Practice imparts boundaries to a providers individual practice which enables protection for both the patient and healthcare provider. The Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice describes the “who,” “what,” “where,” “when,” “why,” and “how” of nursing practice (NursingWorld, 20). The purpose of this assignment is to provide an overview of the Nurse Practice Act , the APN’s Scope of Practice guidelines for the state I will further my career as an NP. I will futher elaborate on the educational, licensure, regulatory requirements, NP prescriptive authority and the NP practice which is allowed for that state. I will also discuss the NONPF Core Competencies, the competencies that I feel are my personal strengths and the Leadership styles which will assist me with the development of my future NP role. APN Scope of Practice My current place of residency and intended state of practice after graduation will take place in the state of New Jersey. The Scope of Practice is based on the needs of the patient. The Consensus Model encompasses the four pillars that define APRN SOP: (LACE) licensure, accreditation, certification, and education (Consensus Model for APRN Regulation: Licensure, Accreditation, Certification & Education, 2008). Education, Licensure and Regulatory Requirements for the State of NJ An individual should a licensed Registered Nurse and must possess a Masters degree in nursing. All individuals should have completed the basic curriculm of specific Master level courses. All students must have successfully completed clinicals in the area of hands on patient care which is a requirement for all APN programs in NJ (APN-NJ). The state of NJ does recognize all APN’s ( NP, CNM, CNS and CRNA) but each specialty carries their own licensing authority. The individual must a posses a RN license and have received accreditation by a national accreditation body. New Jersey is a yellow state, which indicates reduced practice. State practice and licensure laws places a reduction on the capabilities of nurse practitioners to take part in at least one area of NP practice. State law requires a career-long regulated agreement which is combined with another health provider which will enable an NP to provide patient care or limits the setting of one or more elements of NP practice (AANP). APN’s are given prescriptive authority in the state of NJ. A joint protocol is required with a cooperative physician who has also obtained a license in the state of NJ before having the ability to prescribing any medical device or medications. NPs are required to complete 39 hours in pharmacology and 6 contact hours in pharmacology which is generally related to controlled substances to become licensed (AMA).
