Without conscious effort, it can be difficult to direct, sustain, and shift attention when necessary. It is used almost every day when we study or when we find ourselves dazing off into thought when we are driving. System-1 is a fast, reactive thinking process that is used when a situation requires an immediate decision. One example of system-1 thinking is when you are in line at your favorite coffee shop and you order you daily coffee, then processed to drive off or walk to your car.
