+Term Paper: Requirement and Topics You are encouraged to start writing your term paper from this week on. To get a head start, read carefully the suggested topics below, think about the specifics and... decide on one (1) topic (from the following three options). The length of the term paper should be La pages in length (excluding notation), double-spaced, in 12-point Times New Roman font, with one-inch margins. Please begin your paper with a title and a short introduction paragraph that summarizes your main points. End your paper with notation to credit the outside sources or thoughts that you may have used. Use quotations sparingly if necessary. You can succinctly refer to film plots if that helps clarify your arguments; but do not retell details of film plots at length. No paper is considered complete until and unless you have done a spelling check. The term paper must be submitted to Blackboard before the end of Tuesday, Dec. 13. Topic 1. In many of our films, the individual in search for freedom, happiness and a better future is often caught between the concept of individualism and values of the community, such as one's obligation to one's parents who follow older customs or to the social institutions that prescribe prohibitive rules. How do the films depict such conflicts, and what lessons do they offer through the characters' complex life experiences and situations? Use instances from at least five (5) films to explain your viewpoints. Topic 2. Now let us examine female characters and the portrayal of women in our films. Make a list of female characters on your notebook. Try to analyze and classify the characters based on, for example, various demographic traits of characters, including age, race/ethnicity, marital status, occupational status, education level, medical condition, personality, as well as goals of characters. Do you see a few basic types start to emerge? Discuss the spectrum of images of Asian women that our films produce. How do the films explore the power relations and moral ambiguities that women faced and are facing in Asia? Consider the idea of women's agency in its broad sense - it does not have to be rights-bound, but can be in the form of wit, survival strategy, subtle resistance, or else. In this sense, how do female characters show their agency/power/strength in the films? Use examples from at least five (5) films to suonort your arguments.
