It is imperative that you complete your readings thoughtfully and independently. Students who do not do their reading will not do well in this course Review (Important relevant information from old sections) Answer the following questions briefly, using your old AMSCOs as needed. 1. What was the Columbian Exchange - how did it lead to colonization? The exchange of goods between the New and Old Worlds, the Spanish, French and English established colonies in the New World to find more gold and other resources. 2. Why is Britain gaining so much power during the era of industrialization? Because of their massive amount of colonies across the world and defeating the French multiple times in colonization wars. 6.1 “Rationales for Imperialism” Explain how ideologies contributed to the development of imperialism from 1750 to 1900. General 1. How does the poem at the beginning of 6.1 reflect the ideas of imperialism? Because the speaker is saying that White Europeans should establish colonies in the New World for the good of the inferior people living there. Nationalist Motives for Imperialism 2. What characterized most of the 1800s - why are countries wanting colonies? Revolutions, the rise of nationalism, and the creation of nation states, they wanted colonies to assert their nation’s identity in the global arena. 3. How did the following try to assert their national pride through settlement: 1. Britain: After losing the American colonies Britain settled in Australia, India, and Burma. 2. France: Occupied Algeria, New Caledonia, and South Pacific islands 3. Italy and Germany: Both wanted a empire despite being newborn nations and did not acquire empires until the mid 1880’s 4. Spain: While it led colonization in the 1500’s and 1600’s it’s power was greatly diminished by the 19th century 5. Japan: fought China in the Sino-Japanese War and gained Korea and Taiwan. Cultural and Religious Motives for Imperialism 4. Describe how science was used as proof that colonization was a right of stronger nations. Pseudoscientists claimed to have proof that nonwhite races were intellectually and physically inferior to white races. They claimed a smaller skull size proved mental stupidity of Africans and Asians which was untrue. 5. Explain how Charles Darwin’s idea of selection/fittest species was used to justify imperialism. They claimed that survival of the fittest theory proposed by Darwin proved that the spread of European and U.S power proved the biological superiority of whites. 6. How did colonizing countries force their culture on the places they took over? Give specific examples of this. Colonies were often spread over peoples of different cultures and languages and introduced their political and religious institutions on these natives. 7. Explain how religious motives were part of the rationale for imperialism. They supported imperialism by persuading people to give up their traditional beliefs. Economic Motives for Imperialism 8. How did treaties and company charters lead European powers to take over other countries? How did this impact other nations? Treaties gave Europeans the rights to build trading posts and forts to protect their economic interests. When the Industrial Revolution began the market for manufactured goods expanded. 9.
