Identify a political issue or agenda in health care. How would you formalize support to advance this agenda? The nurse should understand how the government work and how policies are created and chang... ed in order to influence public officials to accept new agendas that will improve quality of care for all people (Mason, Gardner, Outlaw, & O’Grady, 2016). My agenda in health care is to create a health care policy that will improve the obesity rate of all Americans. Having a thorough knowledge of obesity and its impact on the cost of healthcare will be essential when the nurse creates a policy change because all heath care programs require funding (Mason et al., 2016). The development of health policy involves both the executive and legislative branches at state and federal levels. The legislative branch is a good access point for policy change through the committees or subcommittees. The standing committee of Health, Environment, Labor, & Pension would be a good start to propose a policy that will provide direct financial incentives to Medicare recipients who lose weight. The chances of finding a group of supporters that will champion for this change is greater in this committee because this committee has jurisdiction over public health concerns (Mason et al., 2016). There are many health concerns and issues in the United States that do not make it to the policy agenda arena. Creating public awareness about the issue and meeting with local policy makers (especially around election time) may create some buzz about the topic and increase the chances of the topic being discussed between committee members. If the nurse succeeds in the first step of turning the issue into an agenda item, the second step is formulation of policy which involves the process of selecting the best proposed solution for the agenda issue (Lumen, n.d.). During this stage it is important to have several alternative solutions to the issue. The nurse will witness the political bargaining process during this stage. One solution may get turned down while another solution may be accepted. During formulation the most efficient and politically feasible solution will be selected therefore it is important to know the cost of the program and the amounts that will be saved by initiating the program (Lumen, n.d.)
