Thought Process Obesity has been increasing over the last few decades. Education regarding the lack of physical activity, the need for healthier options for meals and the removal of candy or soda has been provided to parents. However, childhood obesity has still been on the rise. When does a physician, parent or family determine a child is obese? When does a physician determine that a child is healthy? Would a physician use BMI to determine if obese and if the patient has an increased risk of being diabetic? There are many studies to reference regarding childhood obesity and diabetes. When medical professionals and parents work together to create a plan with diet, exercise and other healthy interventions, it has been proven to reduce weight, decrease BMI and reduce the diagnosis of diabetes in adolescents and early adults. Implementation Plan The objective is to create a plan for each child, parent and medical professional to work together to execute evidenced based strategies to guide our youth into healthier lifestyles at an early age in order to reduce the chances of diabetes. Children between the ages of 1 and 10 years old will be the population of focus. The parents and providers will be included in the care, education and the interventions necessary. Well child visits are required from birth, 2 months, 4 months, 6 months and so on until yearly visits are recommended for every child. (Nerud & Samra, 2017). This is also a time to determine the BMI, and the percentiles on the growth chart, to determine a plan for dietary restrictions if needed to prevent obesity. (Nerud & Samra, 2017). The evidenced based project (EBP) will be executed in the physician office. Dietary recommendations as well as exercises to increase the patient’s physical activity. These areas will be discussed thoroughly in office with a printed plan and log sheet provided to family to document the content. Implementation will begin within a month. Stakeholders consists of obese children between the ages of 1 and 10. The approval for the IRB will have been submitted and obtained prior to beginning the study. ▪ EBP study will have designated leader with physicians and nursing staff. ▪ Obtaining the child’s lifestyle at home will be crucial in determining what barriers will prevent the child from succeeding. Financial factors will play a role with the parents as this could determine food choices, not on the dietary plan, due to the cost of the item. The plan for each patient will include mental health specialist to assist with behavioral concerns should they arise and an exercise regimen. Obtaining feeding times, sleep patterns, activity throughout the day and dietary log will be collected. If the child is able to play video games, screen time will be documented. ▪ In the physician’s office the BMI will be obtained at each visit. Height, weight, head circumference if appropriate and blood sugar checks will be obtained. If the patient requires lab work this will also be collected. All education material will be handed out to families prior to discharge from office with the plan being written out. ▪ Each family who is willing to participate will be met with on an appointment-based time frame in order to di [Show More]
